53-55 Studes make a killer street car. Lowered like a land speed car, not raised like a gasser.
    Just my $.02.....

I would suggest you do about a years worth of research, reading, looking at pictures, etc. You are obviously new to all of this. You are asking very basic questions that points to the fact you have done absolutely no research yourself. I don't often say this but you need to educate yourself more than you need to ask questions.

Not knowing that the early Cads are totally different engines than the 472/500, basic straight axle questions, etc show you have done nothing to research this whole process.

Starting a project of this magnitude, with your base of knowledge at this time, would be a HUGE mistake.

Nope I've never done any research on Caddy engines except when I owned a few. I've owned 472s and 500s and back then the Performer intake just came out. Never had a interest or need to check into earlier Caddy motors. I can tell you anything you need to know about a SBC a BBC or a 348/09 but that is where my knowledge ends. I never had a interest in the others, actually I do know a bit about Studebaker engines and know a 331 Edmunds Caddy intake with enough file and grinding will fit a Studebaker engine. I've done it.
I'm not new to this like you might think, am I new to straight axles...yes..I can read, research . I was only wanting some advice. I have been into Studebakers since I was born. My first car at 16 was a SBC powered 53, yep only kid in my class of 1991 who had a McCullouch powered 289 4spd Hawk for prom, now I'm 45 and I have owned one or more CK body Studes everyday since, in the last 30 years I'd like to think I know them inside and out.
Before you hate on my simpleton minded questions. I have a beautiful 1953 Studebaker Commander setup just as I thought it should be. It has a Hawk Dash, Hawk Bucket seats, 283 t350 Dana 44 3.08 it gets 18 mpg. It has 15x7 American Torq Thrust rims. I plan on a 4.8 or 5.3 conversion which I'll do myself, I have a Ford 8.8 rear. I do all work myself.
I have built slammed bagged S-10s, body drops, all sorts of stuff for customers. I have never done a straight axle. I just wanted some simple suggestions, I'm not a newbie here folks...but moving on.

  5. Interesting.
However, I will stand by my earlier comment:
"ALL old cars don't make good gassers."
    But , it's your reality.

  6. Willys and try five Chevys make great gassers, but that doesn't mean they are all you can build one from. The black and white picture is from around 1965. Sweet misery is from the seventies, and the suicide king is current. These are just inspiration. Lets see what your starting with. Check the measurements on a 48 to 54 ish chevy truck axle, it is fairly narrow. I have one in my Henry J, and it looks right. It sits nose to nose with my 55 President in my dads back yard. I have seen one that used the stock steering, off the center arm.

I really like that Hawk-Suicide King!

Thanks Studebaker Eric. I know where there is a couple of those trucks abandoned wasting away in the desert. I'll grab the tape measure.

I love the early Stude ck models! If you want to make it a gasser more power to ya:D Just dont cross the pro street look with it ...tubbed gassers look retarded. Just finished my 59 lark its more of a sleeper type build ,and I'm having a blast with it!

  11. My friend, your title says Gasser. Suicide King is, by no matter, shape, or form, a Gasser.
You like old Studes. You want to build some kind of wild street burner. That's great, but please give us a break with this gasser thing.

If you want to see some cool gassers, get yourself 'The Gasser files' movie by the Jackson Brothers. Among all the Willys and Anglias is a brief glimpse of a 53 running at Fremont circa 1965.

Start by Googling Jack Chisenhall Studebaker (photo below).

200 plus on the salt, street legal with A/C.

Roger that bama (stupid spell check keeps changing you to Obama).
And by the way; your advice is worth much more than two cents.
