I believed the first Z06 was a 1963 model and that is when the 36 gallon tank made it's debut (I believe). In the early C1 Corvettes there were big brake cars (RPO 687) and tankers(RPO 1625). The tank in the tanker I am quite sure was 24 gallons. I had thought that the #83 car above had a 315hp but I am not 100% sure.

Quick 85 I bought a suspension kit that was allegedly Greenwood components back in the 80s from a guy that needed some quick money at a real discount. I installed all of the components on a 74 Vette and it really did help the car corner much better (at least compared to the factory parts).

As to customized Vettes there is some history to such going on and even though I am not a fan of many of the customs there are guys that are not a fan of my "drag strip" inspired changes as well. It is a part of the history of the marque back in the heyday.

    Jim,
I need a chopped Corvette fix. Can you post some pics of your Chopped C1.
BTW, I hate the term C1, 2, etc. We called them 'solid axles and Sting Rays' back when life was simpler.

Bruce I also hate the C1 term and try to use it sparingly. I agree with solid axles (not straight axles as some refer to them) and Sting Rays is a better way to refer to the the first two sets of Corvette styles. I sometimes use the actual years as there are differences such as if the 83 car was a 62 then the tanker RPO is 488 I believe. The big brake and tanker cars are probably the only early Vettes I would not modify-the rest are fair game IMO.

Here are a couple of pics of the chopped top car. Some of my friends don't like the look of the car but I think it has kind of a sinister look to it. Don't post too many pics as I should be working on it instead of just storing it but I have other projects ahead of it right now (for good reason). The big rear tires that came with the car are on a shelf as they were too wide for one storage spot I had it in for awhile. Here is a picture with some other wheels when I had it out to pull a couple of molds off the car for another project. When I look at the car which is quite often it
still gives me good memories or a by gone era. Also here is a picture when the car was being built in the late 60s.

The big brake and tanker gas tanks are large money if you ever find parts. Also dislike the C1-2-3 name.

    Yes, That's it!!!!!!
    Down right SINISTER!

The top is just right. The hood a bit much, but that is one BAD A$$ car.

If I get my projects caught up before you do, I might try to talk you out of it. I think I'm looking at about 7 or 8 years right now, if everything falls into place. I would probably tuck the slicks in as I like the squared off wheel arch with the squared off tail panel. No Mazmanian cut out for me. :D Oh, and remove the bumper spacing on the front. Te chop just begs for that sectioned nose look.

I'm going to talk myself right into it.

And you might need new friends, especially that Certo guy.

    Thanx a bunch!

Well, it's a shame that "someone" felt the need to delete my entire post instead of just
deleting the later model photo. Thought goes into many of these posts and it's unfair to
delete them for no other reason than a picture of a car. Simply stated, that ****s. If
someone had requested that I 86 the photo I would have complied without a complaint.

Jim, I wasn't putting down Greenwood for any reason, I just never got into the whole IMSA
look. There are geniuses like John Lingenfelter and the late **** Guldstrand, John Greenwood
    was one of them.

I hope this photo is acceptable. John Greenwood (right) with ace Corvette racer Buzz Fyhrie.

Oh man, gotta agree with "nobodY" and "GearheadsQCE". I can't stand all this C1 etc. business.
There were Corvettes, 'vettes and Stingrays. I drove '63 and '69 'vette ragtops ("roadster" was acceptable).

Doug when I bought my avatar car in 1982 in California it was a mess but came with a bunch of semi large moving boxes full of spare parts. In one of the boxes were some big brake parts like ducting and some broken misc pieces that I sold to Mike Ernst (who owned the 1962 Gulf Oil road racer). I wish I could own a big brake car.

Quick in regards to Greenwood I did not take it that way. I was a fan of Greenwood and thought of doing his wide body stuff back in the 80s. The suspension parts I bought were probably some Greenwood stuff and some stuff that was made by who knows who but it was pretty good. I remember my neighbor wanted to go for a ride when I installed all of the bits and pieces and I took the corner at the end my street (90*) at 55mph without any braking which was not bad IMO. He had a 1982 and tried it himself later on and told me he almost lost it.

Bruce sounds good. As you may know Mike is doing a 1959 Vette we drug home a couple of years ago.

Quick85, that '63-4 is how Corvettes were meant to look!! Jim, I have heard of big brake sets going for like $20,000, outrageous to me. I knew a kid in about '73 that traded a big brake fuel '62 for a new four door Nova, and paid money out.

A nice picture posted by Tommy in the Vintage photos thread. What I would give to find this tucked away somewhere. I have mentioned before that at the Meltdown I asked Bones (on the left of course) if he had the VIN or knew the VIN of this car and he told me they never thought these cars would be worth anything and he does not know the VIN. What a shame that such history could not have been preserved. The car may very likely survive but has been transformed back into a stock version with wide whites.

Funny thing when I asked Bones about it, like maybe three years ago, Isky was with him and chimed in with a few comments-that I don't remember off hand (although a buddy with me may remember). 26904717_1855772737766149_4531538622676400600_n.jpg Last year at the Meltdown in the staging lanes I walked up to Isky and told him how appreciative we were with him showing up for the event. He asked me my name and I told him Jim and said "and what is your last name" so I told him and he said he remembered me and he asked why. I told him about the conversation with Bones and he said "Yea that is it". I was blown away with that guy's memory.

LB the pit straight pic is pretty cool. Amazing with the large number of Vettes. The guys that like to turn corners with these cars have represented the brand quite well. If I had another lifetime I would like to build a car and see what fun that would be as well.

LB not sure of the age of the photo. The lead red 62 Vette is Frank Dominianni's old car who was very successful with the car in the 60s but he retired the car in the mid 60s. It was vintage raced in this livery for a number of years and still survives today although it is now red and yellow. The picture may be in the 90s if I had to guess but it is strictly a guess. I have a couple of pictures of the car when Frank raced it and he had one very clumsy roll bar and one very round bar. This looks like the bar they used when they vintage raced it. With the guys sitting on chairs in the pits I would say it was strictly a vintage race but really cool nevertheless.

This is one of my favorite pictures and posts on this thread in a long time. I like the early pictures from when Corvettes were fighting it out on the Dragstrip

Jason one of my favorites as well. The trophys and the pie crusts and the overall clarity really makes it a cool pic.

Hi Jim, it's for sale on that 'faceplace' site in suburban Chicago. ***uming it's an old SCCA club racer.

Thanks for sharing, that Corvette looks interesting. Do they give any information on it or say how much they are asking for it for those of us that don't do Facebook ?
