    Why do they need the push cars?No starters?

    depends on the car, some have no starter, some have such tall gears they dont want to dump the clutch until moving pretty good, and some only have an "in and out "box, no gears, just in gear or out.

    I addition to what rusty valley said. Prior to 1955 most cars were 6 or 8 volt. When compression was increased the start on 6 volts would not turn the engine fast enough to start. Pushing was the only option. Rules allowed this at that time. Later the rules were changed to say the engine had to "attempt to start" with a starter, if it did but didn't start it could still be push started.
