hello all , first time poster here.. have a old 49 dodge coronet with the 230 flathead 6 .. my father and I bought it as a fun project together.. was driving home from the car show and noticed a slight knock when under power ..I was only a few miles from home so we slowly limped it back to the house. Pulled the oil pan and noticed in the bottom of the pan there were a few shavings/ chunks of copper.. turned out the one of the copper piston pin bushings had come apart.. sent the rods out and had new bushings put in .. figured while it was all apart might as well give it a light hone,re ring it and put in new pistons. can’t seem to find the right size rings for this thing!ordered some original sized rings and the ring end gaps were almost 3/16 inch.. The rings that were in it had 3/16 inch ring end gaps also..Maybe whoever was in the motor before put the wrong rings? That would explain why it smoked so bad after going down a hill under back pressure.. according to what I looked up the original bore is 3.25 ... had the pistons mic’ed and they measure 3.0330 ... how do I know what size pistons and rings to order? Thanks in advance and I apologize for the lengthy question..
Well you need to know how and if this engine was bored over size. Pistons and rings are available to .060 and even .080. Dont let anyone tell.you thats too much on this engine as it aint. Very thick castings. Vintage Power Wagon, Egge, are 2 suppliers and there are more. If you go to P15 d24 site do some searching on.your questions as there is a lot of info on there. You could start a thread and a lot of experts will post just take them.with a grain of salt. Seek out Dpollo Tim Keith, Dodgeb4ya, Tim Kingsbury, classiccarjack to name a few....good luck
you need a good mesurment of the bore this dont seem right. according to what I looked up the original bore is 3.25 ... had the pistons mic’ed and they measure 3.0330
Original pistons were oval ground so measure both with the pin and perpendicular. What is the actual bore? I got mine pistons, and rings from Eggs. Mine were +.030. Were the ring gaps staggered around the circumference of the pistons. Smoking after cornering or at high vacuum usually means worn valve guides. Is there a lot of white vapor coming from the oil fill breather after shut down .. This indicates blow by of compression past worn rings. You should get good measurements of cylinder diameter, then talk to the folks at Eggs.
doesn’t have any blow by , only time it ever smoked was after going down a long hill with the motor holding the car back then after acceleration again it would blow out big puff of blackish smoke..thank you for your reply going to eggs now.. pretty sure mine is 060 over ..
Did you do a compression test? Black smoke is too much fuel is the base of the carburetor wet after running? How much oil was it using? I go through a pint for 700 miles but my rear main seals and side covers are leaking.
You can call Hastings and give them your bore size and ring grove width. They will sell you rings. Don't fool around with "it's a .060 over '49 Dodge". Just buy rings by the size you want. I would suppose any good parts (NAPA) store can do the same. You did ream the ridge before removing the pistons, right? If you beat the pistons out past the ridge, the rings can and will screw up the ring lands and there is a good chance it will blow oil when your back together.
do you just want to re-ring? check ebay. back in the day, engines with a lot of wear were freshened with "steel section" or "rings for re-ringing." you hone, end-gap and put 'em in. i see 'em on ebay a lot.
