The pump showed up today along with some other pieces. As i mentioned before due to the extra boost i need to run a new higher volume pump. The old pump is a enderle 1100. Its a real good pump with a flow rate of 16 gallons. Its also cast aluminum. Not only can a cast pump swell up due to high pressure its also effected by temperature changes. These issues change the output of the pump as the clearances change internally. If the pump is changing its output the tune up is changing. It becomes a tuning nightmare. While slightly heavier a steel pump is the better option for the reasons mentioned. This pump if taken care of should last many years. The disc thats clamped on the back has a matching disc on the pump extention. The two are joined together then a quick clamp is placed around them both. This is how i engage and disengage the pump so fast. It also allows me to turn the pump however i need it. To add eight extra port nozzles im replacing the distribution block to a 16 line unit. Most modern blower intakes can accept up to 24 nozzles. If more fuel is needed the heads can be modified for spray bars under the valve covers. Pump rotation has to be verified. If its backwards the pump wont work. You have to follow the instructions. This applies to all mechanical pumps. They are easy to change the rotation. Pump technology has come along way recently. On a fuel car this is a vital piece of the tuning puzzle.
Parts are showing up for the fuel system upgrades. After the pump arrived i installed a new inlet on the pump its now a number 16. The old pump was a number 12. The new fitting will really increase flow from the tank to the pump. The cable bracket also needed to be changed. I started putting the blower and injection back together. Everything was polished first. The new 16 line fuel block fits just fine. I just need to measure for another set of port lines. The heads received 34 studs each. Im doing this work inside the house were its nice and warm. Im consulting with andy starr from hilborn on a major upgrade to the injector. More on that later. Stay tuned in.
Looks like it is coming together nicely. I just got my Missile oil pump from steve and my wife was impressed with how (pretty) it was. She said it was a shame to cover it up, but I think that about all the parts. When I was talking to andy about a injection system, he was pushing me towards a 8 injector setup, rather than 4 like you have, is there a reason that you are staying with the 4 injector? Tony
Im working on a bunch of small sub assembles. That way when the block is done everything is ready to go together. There is always something to do. This weekends job is the zoomies. I will be talking to andy later today. Im assuming he wants eight smaller nozzles compaired to my four large nozzles. He is the efi expert i would go with what he says. I went with four because i didnt want a fuel rail on both sides of the injector.
We think the injector with 2 3/8 inch butterflies will not be big enough. Driving the blower harder will require more air flow. These castings can also come 3 inches. The problem with the 3 inch bores is the tip in off idle. Now i have a bigger engine i can use the big 3 inch. A very slow action is required on the gas pedal to help with street driving. There is enough material to bore it out. A new shaft and butterflies has been ordered. The casting is in the mill with a boring bar set to 3 inches. The final size will be 3.002 inches. We will finish hone to size. The dirt rings on the casting now will be around the size it will end up. From the bottom you can see how much needs to be removed. I think we can all see where this is heading.
Can you move the injectors to help the tip in? When you get this done you should post this chapter in the induction thread......it needs some teching up.
For the low-speed street driving.... Can you make a graduated non-linear throttle gear for the first quarter of travel? Or a separate throttle that only has 1/4 total travel? Sort of like an old mechanical tri-power where the first part of throttle travel only opens one 2-bbl carb
The issue is the size of the butterflies. As they start to open so much air is let in its like going 1/2 throttle on a carburated car. It becomes too much too fast. To cure this or at least reel it in some a few things can be done. A larger cube engine helps. A cam with 284 degrees duration at .050 helps. And a change to the timing map helps. Pulling timing at low rpms kills some low end power off idle. hilborn has a efi system that eliminates two butterflies blocking them off for street driving. Im willing to compromise some to drive it on the street but not block off bores.. The mag is a whole story unto itself. Its locked in at 50 degrees or more. No tip in worries on nitro. Its instant full throttle.
The crank was picked up after balancing. The speed shop dulled several drill bits and end mills trying to put two holes in it for the addition of mallory metal. They finally went to a machine shop supply store and bought a special cutter. They said the crank is super hard and very good quality. Its a brand new valasco. Im still waiting on sleeves. I started on the new zoomies today. These are hedman husler brand. They come bent with four different angles. They need to be grouped together. I have a pic showing both ways they can go. Its clear which way is backward. I write the angles on the pipes in several areas due to all of the cutting and trimming. Im putting them evenly spaced for a more nostalgic look. Due to the always present threat of fire im adding the outer sleeves for the set i use on the track. The outer tube stays cooler reducing the fire risk if hot oil hits them. they are welded at the flange only. if they are welded at both ends the welds will break. the outer tube needs to expand and contract. they slide over the pipes and are cut two inches short. the inner pipe gets welded first then the outer pipe is slid up and welded. Im setting the angle at 37 degrees. This will give me some forward thrust and some downward force for stability. Setting them at 45 degrees would give alot of downforce. The funny cars have found out laying them back will decrease et big time. They also create scary handling if a cylinder goes out. The car will dart the opposite way. Nhra recently set the layback rule at 30 degrees max. I will come close to splitting the two. We will add a support from the frame to the zoomies. There is so much downforce it tries to push the pipes down tearing them from the flanges. Nitro does crazy stuff. There is alot to a simple looking set of zoomies.

I stopped by the polishers to get a progress report on the rims. One should be done on wednesday the other one in two weeks. These rims will have the street tires mounted to them. It may be a little over the top for the street but im ok with that. It kind of fits the theme of everything else i have done to to the car.
It took a few years to find another set that i could afford. The sad thing is most guys dont even know what they are or how rare they are. I just think they are cool and the right wheel for my car.
I found this pair on hot heads swap meet page. The guy that had them was going to be at the pri show. I met him in a parking garage and we swung a deal. It just some how was meant to be. The longer i stared at them the more i knew they had to be polished. They take on a completely different look polished.
On top of all the car stuff i have been working with homeland security. They are very aware racers have nitro in their possession. Nitro is one of 200 chemicals of interest to national security. To have over 400 lbs (about 42 gallons) of fuel a special licence is required. Online training along with a community risk assessment and backround check are part of the process. A site assessment of the propertys security will come later. The local authorities will be aware of whats going on here. If a breakin should occur the responce will we treated as a terrorist threat. It wont be pretty. Think swat teams and attack dogs etc a full response. They have to assume the worst case scenario. All my security measures that were in place have been upgraded. The crew members all have to take the training as well. They also require backround checks for anyone that has access to the fuel. These laws have been in place for a few years now but only recently have they been actively seeking out the racers. They just dont want the nitro falling into the wrong hands. It best to be on the right side of the law. These guys are not playing around. To order fuel now a special identification number needs to be given. Think '60's type race car haulers like Landy, Sox, Prudomme. 30 gallon drum mounted under the bed on each side. One with alcohol, one with nitro. Guess that wouldn't fly now days?
I haven't gotten the bill yet. it really depends on what kind of condition the wheels are in to start with. All 50 year old magnesium wheels have some corrosion. If the pits are deep it takes more time. Other price factors are how much do you want polished. The outer edge can be done. The outer edge and the first hoop polished. Or the front face of the wheel. Then there is the back side. On the front wheels i do the back because its seen. On the rears i have the areas that can be seen between the windows done. The cost is based on time. The magnesium is also a big dirty mess so i give them a tip. Starting cost for a pair would be around 300 dollars. The whole wheel costs more of coursse. One wheel is the way i got it the other after it was glass beaded. I blast them myself to save money. Its hard to believe these are the same wheels that are being polished.

Never thought that aspect of handling nitro, even if it means some extra hassle for racers I like your governments approach on this. That stuff is not a joke and needs to stay where it belongs, meaning Brians tank.
This is why i like polished magnesium. One down one to go. Not all wheels look good polished. Bear claws certainly do. The deed is done on the injector. It now has a 3 inch bore. The engine cant make big power if it cant breathe. I flat out refuse to put a bird catcher or a big ugly on the car so the three incher must do.
I've read this from sept 2015 and wanted to comment before now but never have. So here goes. What a kick ass (re) build. Your attention to detail and plain math and education is complimentary. Keep it up I'm sure there is more fun down the road.

The fuel consumption will for sure be increased. The added cubes plus more boost are bringing it up. I was on the hamb board parts for sale and found this. Its a brand new 7 gallon moon tank. It came complete with cool sturdy brackets and is polished. The new tank will give me a extra two gallons. Its the same length. The old tank was eight inches across. The new one is ten. I dont think it will change the look of the car. This tank may not seem like a big deal but its really a huge deal. If the car runs out of fuel it goes boom.
