This is my daily driver from May 1 - Oct 31. After that there is just too much snow up here in Northern WI. to contend with. I average 8,000 miles a year and get 12.5 mpg.
I drive my '35 sedan daily, sometimes I even commute to work in it and with the injected motor at 27 mpg it's the most economical thing I own (my real commuter is a new HHR). The wife drives the Flower roadster truck daily too, she'd rather use it than the near new SUV sitting in the driveway. The little 8BA only gets 15-17 mpg.
i drive my 39 sedan every day.it has a 264"flattie with 2-2's,and it gets around 15mpg with a 3.78 gear.when i drive my roadster,it gets about 18-19mpg.with a 400 horse sbc and 5-speed with 3.55 gear. it can be done. -danny
Truthfully, I'm more of a '50s-up kinda rodder! A track-t would be fun, but it'd be more like a motorcycle to me--not something I'd drive every single day, rain or shine. Gotta have vent windows on a daily. Even the wife digs a vent window--otherwise, we have to drive with the windows up and A/C so her hair doesn't blow around in her face. I prefer windows down all the time--and with a vent window, you can "tune" the airflow around you to the point you don't need A/C (except in stop-n-go traffic). -Brad
Not a HotRod,but I drive my '49 Shoebox to work,40miles,everyday.Check your mirrors!Look for me on the 91 and the 60 Frwy's.
I guess you're a little narrow minded on what is a hot rod. So no I don't drive a hot rod daily. But if you widen it to include who the hell can run you into the ground and never even notice you were there drop me a note. By the way by your definition a '40 Ford doesn't count as a hot rod but a '39 deluxe would. Oh incase your interested, my 400+ HP daily gets 16 to 18 city or highway loaded or not ( no O/D).
No, actually I am not narrow minded. I have a coupe with a flathead and a banjo rear and I was wondering if someone else drives something like it . I love to hear from every one that is getting their hotrods out reguarly. I would also like to hear from more people that putting a thirties rod with an early drive train into service . I have some concerns about the cost of keeping it on the road , not just to enjoy it daily, but as an only means of transport. I have been driving my 70 chevelle , had to put a new starter in just to get home from work. I am hoping to juggle between the coupe and the chevelle and hope at least one of them can get me to work and back. Old beat, I wish I had the problem of having to drive a chopped merc. By the way , I would love to drive a 39 or 40 coupe jeff
so sorry to be a "dick", this car gets 26mpg with a pontiac 400. so maybe a flatty would be better at the pump
I am glad you have 57 ford that you drive , what drive train??? Is it easy to get parts for??? it is a hot rod, just not like the hotrod that I am asking about. also, does anyone have a flatthead in anything that is daily? jeff
The only problem I have is the cops don't like my side pipes, neither do my neighbors at 4:30am for that matter.I don't know the gas mileage, but I do know it gets better mileage than my '95 Chevy truck! The way people drive here in California,I have close calls all the time!People try to get me to stop,to take a picture,WHILE i'm in traffic!Any of you guys who drive your cars daily know what I am talking about, people are IDIOTS!
i think tuck could probably give you some preety sound advice on running a flathead as a daily. im about to delve into that teritory myself with my "new" car so im pretty intrested in hearing most of this info also. tim
its a customline 2 door sedan, running the stock flatty w/ overdrive. god willing itll be up and running with in a week ill be in omaha a few times in the next while and definatly in july for livefast heres a crappy pic of the whole car hopefully ill have some outside pix soon. its been sitting there for a looooooooong time tim
I drive a 50 ford with an 8BA everyday. To and from school and to work, only problem is long trips in the summer; it gets hot sometimes. Other than occasional heat worries and a fuel pump failure its been great. I have had to replace a few parts related to the motor though (clutch, pressure plate, rear end) And sage advice i got here on the HAMB is swap the master cylinder for dual chamber on whatever car if it isnt already, brake failure is sketchy.
Used to drive my '33 truck daily. Still finishing up a few niggly bits on my '34 Tudor - will drive it daily when happy with it. I drive it occasionally now. Other occasional is my '39 Harley WL...
just curious but what kinda milage are you getting? and what trani have you got? im just wondering as im planing some trips and am trying to ball park milage for my budget
