I had the trans in my deuce 5 window rebuilt by a reputable trans shop and now after you park it and it sits for a while it starts to leak fluid out of the vent pipe. Checked to make sure it wasn't over filled and it's fine. I have a B&M cooler beside the trans on the frame rail and a Derale trans cooler pan. My trans man says a stock pan used 11 quarts and the cooler pan adds 2. Any suggestions?

So if you’ve filled with 13 quarts maybe empty a quart or so. Sounds like a lot.

After the car sits for a while. Fluid will drain back out of the Converter. I think you are over filling it a bit.

Actually we only have 11 quarts in it at this time and have not added the extra 2 quarts for the deep pan

    A stock pan TH350, with a 12" converter takes around 10 Qts.

Are you really sure that the fluid is coming out of the vent tube at the top of the case while not running?
The trans would have to be severely overfilled for that to happen while not running.

Is the fluid level in the dip stick tube also as high as the top of the case where the vent is, after it sits and not running?

You could raise the car up level and loosen all the pan bolts with the engine warm and running in park.
Let the excess fluid leak out.

Full warm should be roughly at the pan rail. You could also then check to see how accurate the dip stick is and remark it if necessary. Then you can replace the pan gasket and refill to the dipstick marks. Cold running, fluid level should be about 1 Pint below add a Pint on the dipstick.

What kind of dipstick tube are you using?

After much trouble shooting it turned out to be the pan gasket. I used one of the Derale cooling pans and they come with a paper gasket. The gasket was installed with a thin coat of RTV on each side and bolted up. Seems that after sitting for a while the gasket became permeated with fluid and let it seep thru. Installed a new cork gasket and to date it's stayed dry. We'll see? OEM style kick down cable with Lokar dipstick which is dry.

The fluid in a automatic transmission is supposed to stay in the torque converter, pump, and servos, valve body, etc. If the seals in these items are less than perfect, the fluid will drain from them ,if the car sets for a time. The fluid then collects in the pan, possibly overfilling it and causing it to overflow out the vent. Bones

  10. I've got one here that when it sits 24 hrs the fluid level climbs to about 4" over the full mark.

    Thanks for the update.
This should make that peeved guy happy for a couple mins.

Paper gaskets aren't good with transmission fluid. I've always liked ATP "third hand" gaskets that had several smaller bolt holes that would hold bolts. It was made of a cork like material that was impregnated with something that sealed well but was reusable.

If you use RTV, you need an RTV made for automatic transmission fluid.

  12. I want to ask how a pan gasket leak fooled you to think it was the vent?

It was a VERY tricky gasket.
