So, I’m setting here looking at car pics online, and I see scallops on a mid 60s car. Now when I see scallops i think of a 50s custom car, but I have to admit there are a few early- mid 60s cars that the scallops look pretty good on. So when it comes to scallops what range of years is acceptable?

In a very broad generalisation Scallops went out with the end of the 1950s. Were revived during the nostalgia Rod & Custom revival of the 1970s and came back again in the 1990 and the new traditionalists. But always on 1950s or earlier styled cars.
In the sixties metalflake and other crazy paint became king together with mag wheels.

Friend of mine had a full size 71 Mercury 2 door hardtop. It was dechromed and painted flat black with green scallops. Looked good. This was about 20 years ago.

Scallops have been used on cars since gawd knows when. I am no expert on the subject, maybe there is someone who is but in my mind they are just a lazy man's flame. Way easier to lay out. Look at this car then think scallops for example.

If era of popularity I am not sure when they became popular. As for what car one could lay scallops, *hot rod or custom about any body style can work as long as they are laid out properly. Properly obviously being in the eye of the beholder.

    * all hot rods are customs but not all customs are hotrods.

Back in the 80s I hung around with an old painter. One day he told me a story about Scallops but I have no idea if its true. He said in the 50s they did a lot of nosing ,decking and dechroming. To save the money and time repainting the whole car they would just paint the areas that the stuff was removed. I have noticed after that ,the scallops are often put on in those areas.True ? you decide.

  8. Don't know about the '50s but I have done that to cars sort of. Replace the rockers, two tone it. Repair front end damage or nose one it gets flames. ( we even put backward flames on a '55 Ford once that got hit in the rear  )

None. I had a friend who had his car done in the '60's. It was a '51 Olds and it didn't work at all. I think that has permanently biased me against scallops. (Panel painting as well; and as long as we're on the subject, the graphics on some street rods today make me shudder!)

  11. LOL I am not a big fan of Von Dutch style flames. I have seen that style of flames on a car or two that it worked though.

I think that scallops can work but they have to be laid out right for the shape of the car in question, they are not one size fits all. I have seen some of the ugliest scallops in existence since I joined the HAMB

Acceptable to whom? If you like them, put them on. No one elses opinion is worth more than your own.

I hope someone told Larry Watson and Dean Jeffries that scallops weren't acceptable in the 60's.

    Absolutely true.

Here is a Larry Watson paint job from 1957. Notice that the custom paint was primarily added to hide the places where a stock '57 Custom Royal Lancer had emblems. ;)

In this way, Watson was able to do a paint job every day after school...

Scallops are even more out dated then pastel paint jobs and the graphics craze of the early to mid nineties. The only scallops I like come from the sea. It would be a cold day in Hell before scallops ever appear on any car I own.

I don’t have anything right now to put them on. Just saw some I thought were cool and bright it up to some friends. Found out that there were some pretty strong feelings about what is acceptable. So I figured I’d ask the The H.A.M.B. crowd.

I have thought about some scallops on my Morris Minor g***er project. Even laid them out with tape. to see. Can't decide. Too much work not to like it when done.

Personally I like scallops. A lot less busy than flames. As for being outdated, after I get it painted, I plan on doing scallops on the Dodge giving it a "period" look.

Traditional hot rodding may be considered outdated.

OK. I guess they're alright on that car. Kinda makes an integrated theme.

You can put scallops on anything.

Spend a lot of time on your layout, very difficult to get right and flow with the car. Spend time looking at Watsons designs and layouts.

I personally dont care for scallops, but am interested to see what you come up with.

Scallops are art. I don't know art, but I know what I like. [emoji78] If the car looks "right" with scallops imo then their acceptable. By me. Results may vary.
