My advice go black , I got 1 of each polished and black. My wife's car is the 32 with the polished motor. There are stupid hours put in to keep it looking good , my car the Pontiac is a 10 minute deal to clean the motor.
Donut Dave, I am interested in the origin of the black air cleaner you have on the SBC. I made one of very similar appearance to cover an LS motor. I would like to be able to purchase such an air cleaner and modify it to fit... Would you share where it came from? Thanks! moses allinger@comporium.net
I made the air cleaner in my shop, wanted to cover the carburetor as much as possible. I'm just a "Backyard Barney" builder, not interested in doing work for others!
I understand completely! What did you start with and what it is made with? Where did you get the chrome/stainless screen? I am looking at making another one, and if I could find a starter piece, it would be less labor for me... I started with a plywood buck and 23 gauge sheet metal to keep it light and easy to form. . Cut holes for air filter, Spot welded it all together. Now have to body work and decide on paint. Thanks for the reply and any info you are willing to share.
An "Amen" on the Eastwood Ceramic. it is damn near bulletproof and takes fuel contact very well. Only one I know that endures brake fluid. A few I built for clients.........
I assume you mean the ones on the Coupester. That set I built using mostly Patriot components. Most people I think just use the Speedway ones. The turnouts are just segments of 3 1/2" mandrel U cut to fit. I have blockoff plates inside the U with silicone gaskets to close off the open headers when wanted. I don't care for the appearance of the 4 bolt plates to block the headers. They pull off with a wing nut. I don't get too carried away with perfection on these as PA. require them to be wrapped anyway. This was an early build pic on this car with a 4V carb to break in the engine. It was replaced with a set of 'trips after the engine was setup. Very nice driver with a ton of legroom and great profile.
Saw the original Mysterion when I was maybe 12 years old. Completely ended any hope I had for a normal life...... I've had the hot rod affliction ever since.
Black paint for heat dissipation? I can see it for increased heat absorption but to dissipate? I would think thin paint would do that job. I can’t understand how the inside of an engine block will know what colour it is on the outside. Please explain this concept works.
That. apparently, was the results of NASCAR studies. Probably why radiators are painted black since day one instead of white.
Nothin' looks better than a black engine. Trying to locate the origin of an oil leak really sucks on a black engine.
That reminds me of a tip, if you want to find a difficult to isolate oil leak, clean the area, run the engine and light the area with a UV light. This will find the leak. Bob
Many years ago the late Henry '' Smokey"" Yunick said to a paint the engine black .He said for better heat transfer So I have painted almost every engine I have worked on black for almost 50 years. He also said paint fire walls on race cars flat black .....
