It's hard to get sparks from bias-ply tires. I'm not really sure what it is you're seeing...

 

I don't have a copy of the movie to look at, but it could be a smoke bomb the crew put in to simulate tire smoke.

Ive seen that very thing myself, and also wondered. I have never noticed the second gear sparks though. I just figured it was a cig bein tossed out the window! might have to watch it again!

i have never noticed the sparks but i did realize something watching that race. milner took out his header plugs for the race yet his exhaust is coming out his rear tips. weird.

Man that film influnced the **** outta me in '74, I was 16. I had to watch that clip twice. Now Ive got goose bumps. Thanks..

 

He took his plugs out for the second race, not the first one (the one tingler is talking about that happened in town.)

And really, some exhaust would still be coming out the rear pipes unless those were blocked off.

 

Maybe some suspension parts rubbing together from the shock of putting power to the rear? Or maybe the drive shaft hitting the floor boards from said putting power to the rear. Just some random thoughts thrown out there. later shawn

I could swear there was also sparks when he takes off from the stop next to Toad- along with the lighnting bolt sound effect

Maybe there was a nail stuck in the tire?

 

Did he spin the tires? Could a rock/etc. stuck in tire tread have caused it?

 

John had mentioned in the movie that Falfa had him....but from the movie...John was taking the checker flag from the beginning.

did you guys notice that or is it the angle of the shot that's decieving.

Now I remember why I don't have that dvd,I cry like a little girl when I see that '55 sacrificed for art!

 

It was a nail in his tire, that's why it poped and lost control at the end of the movie

I am the furthest thing from an expert on the movie although I do remember the sparks. I have very little clearance from the inside of my rear wheels to the leaf springs, it may be a stretch but could they be suffering from the same condition?-Jim

 

I always thought it was some movie special effects thing, movie guys seem to thrive on making sparks and flames and explosions anytime a car is going fast, even though in real life these things would never happen.

If it wasn't intentional, maybe it was a camera mount they forgot to fully remove?
