I bought a hood ornament for a 37 Ford. It has pits, and chips on it. I want to paint it. What kind of paint would work the best on it?? I plan to sand it down, and get it as smooth as I can first. Thanks.

Why not powder coat it ? Pits and chips can be filled with JB Weld because that stuff can take a sustained temperature of 500 degrees, hotter than a powder coat oven. I've done this a lot with great results.

Sandblast all the loose chrome and copper off, cleans out the pits, and it will also rough up the rest of the chrome so your smoothener will stick. Then any kind of paint/coat will have a better chance of staying put.

If you don't have one, there's got to be a buddy around that has a blasting booth. Should take all of five minutes.

  5. I've used vari-prime as a first coat. Then, some primer to fill the pits and finally a top coat.

I will go to Harbor Freight and get one of those spot blasters. I know that the silver does not look like the chrome that comes on it, so I thought I would go with Black. The car will be White. Now those that have had it done before.. Can I put tape on areas I don't want to be coated?? That area between a V-8 on the trunk handle I would like to paint White, or can I paint right over the powder coat??
