Changing from the 40-Ford juice brakes that came on my un-finished coupe to Boling Bros self-energizing Lincoln brakes. The 40-Ford brakes have a grease shield that looks like a good idea to keep grease out of the brake shoes; however, with the grease shield, it is pretty much impossible to get a wrench on the nuts that retain my hoop-style steering arm for the F1 side steering. I don't think any more modern car that I've owned has had grease shields... So, I think I'm gonna chuck the grease shield...foolish, or ok idea?
Your shield is on upside down, but I don't know if that will make any difference on getting the nuts on the hoop steering arm. When I installed my cheapo hoop steering arm (the same one they've been making for 65 years) I cut a little of the shield away in the corners so I could fit a wrench in there. Still left lots of shield to keep the brakes cleaner. Henry was no dummy.
We used the shields on our roadster with F1 brakes. Just like Alchemy said. Better safe than sorry???
Grease shields were needed when seals were not so good...but if you are using a modern design seal, you should not need the shield.
Thanks fellas! I will play with flipping the shields and if that doesn’t solve my problem, I’ll delete them. Thanks for all the re***urances-I’ll be an expert someday!
