Projects New engine has oil in the exhaust

Was that motor all buttoned up when you got it? As in, oil pan, timing cover, intake and valve covers? How is the crankcase vented?

You are asking questions looking for advice, from the info given it sounds like a half assed rebuild or you got taken... Same thing either case.

How about some photos? Those go a long way in helping out. Otherwise we are just guessing. Throw us a bone and post some pics ... With and without the valve covers on it.

Them house flipping shows drive me nuts.
Every time there's some hidden budget buster that nobody caught.
I did 18 years in construction and remodeling as a general contractor. Never ever did I go to a customer after the fact after the job started with the such problems like they show on TV, and we did some really off the wall stuff. Anyone with 2 weeks on the job can find the drama stuff they show on tv before the work is sold. The absolute worst surprise ever for me and a customer was an ant infested window header. It was coming out anyway for a door any ways. That one did cost the customer $500 extra for his ants. Big drama budget buster right.

 

You did have the radiator in while running it right?

You had fair compression and you say you took a leak down test. What were the % of leak down for each cyl? Compression and bad leak down do not go together How did you do the leak down?. As stated before a engine put together properly will start on a couple turns, then will not smoke. May use a little oil over time to seat rings. You need to Know what parts were used in the rebuild. For sure what rings (oil rings for sure) Are they oil rings that need a vacumn pump. give us some pic's of the exhaust ports. DO NO RUN THIS ENGINE UNTIL YOU FIND WHAT IS WRONG.

I used a leak down tester from harbor freight so not really confident in the numbers but it showed 40 percent in every cylinder and you could see the leakage around the valves

You have a oil ring problem. IMO I thing you have low pressure rings or who ever put the rings (oil) on over lapped the expander spring . Take it apart and prove me right or wrong. Guilds or valve seals won't cause that much oil in the exhuste ports .Hope You find the problem

 

Looks like antifreeze. He needs to pull that intake and check that gasket. Looks like water in oil also.

 

I called the guy I bought it from and he is supposed to call with the engine builder number but we will see.

If you are correct at 40% on every cyl. That is a contstant That something was put
together wrong the same in all cyl (rings----- std pistons in over bored block (don't laugh seen it done) TAKE IT APART

 

he said that he bought these pistons with the rings as a set and the only set I've found comes with Moly rings

Is that a pic that was given to you. and you put pistons in the block?
Were the rings already on the pistons?
We many years ago used to run no valve seals on the exhaust valves (Racing)
Also think of an old wore out engine The valve seal were cracked or not there, The guilds wore completely out and all the engine did was smoke

 

It is a Lucas zinc additive it changed the color of the oil before I even ran it

 

How did the antifreeze get in the valve/runner area?

It' not coolant it' the oil additive. I used it to help breakin all the moving parts

 

Looks like the top of that piston has some small impact craters in it.
