Projects New engine has oil in the exhaust

    Looks like coolant on top of the piston. Do you know what heads those are?

    I took the picture through the plug hole and the heads are double hump heads

    And I could be coolant but the leak down didn' show any head gasket issue but at this point anything is possible.

    In your first post you said engine smoked; blue or white? Sure looks like moisture on piston top. When did you add this Lucas additive? Before you started the first time? Did you add to crankcase or pour down carb throat?

    That coolant had to get there somehow. That could be the source of the smoke. If you can pressure test the cooling system with the plugs out you may find the problem. You may have a head gasket or head problem. Is that by chance the passenger front cylinder? I saw coolant by the intake bolt on that cylinder.

    I removed the head covers and poured it over all the rockers down the return holes and in the push rod holes. Then I reprimed the engine with an old distributor with the gear knocked off. I tried to do everything I read about breakin in a new engine. And that was cylinder 1 in the pic but they all looked that way. I thought it was condensation because it' been 70 then 10 than 70 again here

    Every time I pull a spark plug it' wet so it just may be coolant and oil combo.

    I definitely will i can handle pulling the top end apart so I hope the mystery ends there. I have found that most mysteries are best solved with large amounts of cash

    You have a 50-50 chance top end or bottom end. Only thing the bottom end is a lot more expensive. So as for the money the ratio changes. Good luck
     
  12. Pull the engine. Might take you a few hours.
    Get it on an engine stand. Might take you 30 mins if you gave the damn bolts.
    Tear the engine down. Should tale you about an hour and a half labeling everything in Bags and numbering lifters .
    Find the problem. Might take you a couple hrs
    So far, no cash out just time.
    Getting it back together might take more time and money.

    To me that looks like moisture droplets
    And they look green.
    The bottom looks like a puddle

    Start with intake manifold bolt torque check. Next pull intake manifold. Check gasket interface with manifold face and cylinder head face. Cracks in intake? If these are okay, move on to head removal.

    Only one thing makes it look like this and it ain't Lucas adative.

  18. You could pressurize the cooling system with the plugs out and see what happens in there with your bore scope.

    If this is correct I think he has 2 problems. There is way too much oil in the exhaust.
    That said If coolant The bottom end should come apart for cleaning.You may get away cleaning with out tear down, but???? I still stand by my recomdation of a complete tear down

    Don't knock your self out. We all have been in your shoes some time in our life.
    I have a crank ground stroker sbc in my dragster I just bought. The flex plate was not with the engine and I have such a vibration at 100mph I can't see. So out it comes for a re balance. I know this doesn't help you at the moment, but we all learn from it. Keep asking Questions.

    He could loosen the oil drain plug and see how much coolant, if any, has entered the crankcase. If none or a small amount... no harm -no foul. SBC takes a lot of abuse in the real world and with so few minutes of run time and a tight budget, he might assume some risk.

    What's your oil level like right now? Is it where it was when you first filled it or higher? Is the radiator staying full?

    Oil level is normal and coolant is the same also.

    Could it be that the oil additive he poured in the crankcase first, still be siphoning in from the same spot as the coolant
    He still has not related what color smoke was emitted from the exhaust. Antifreeze can leave an oily residue if in large enough amounts, but he should notice a drop in the radiator level at some point.
