I was viewing the most recent pixs in the Drag cars in motion. thread and must be having a senior moment. Why were the the front wheels moved forward on AWB cars. I understand it on the street and in other forms of racing, but not drag racing.

  2. Moving the front wheels forward gives you the same weight bias advantage as moving the engine back.

An AWB car moved the rears forward and some but not all moved the fronts as well. The real thing that made a car AWB in the eyes of most is moving the rears forward.

Anyway it gives you the same advantage as moving the engine back.

I’d say that’s a “Yes”........now that is an extreme case of “engine setback”.....looks like same principle of weight distribution but by a different path. ;)

    Weight distribution.
    Same reason as the rear.

  8. Its a funny thing and I doubt that anyone gives it any thought, we move the front axle forward a lot on our old cars and it does accomplish the same thing more or less. Lets use an example, suppose you have an A with the stock axle location and move the axle forward say 5% of the wheelbase (about 5-7"?). If you did not also move the engine forward like amount you just increased your setback by 5%.

If you drop it down in the dirt at the same time it won't make as much difference as if you leave it up at the same ride height.

Thanks porkn******, that I understand. All I could think of was maintaining, by rule, a specific or minimum wheelbase.
