Just got my recast 1953 Ford Accessory Steering Wheel back from Koch’s. An amazing job, reasonable cost, totally pleased! Lifetime guarantee! http://www.kochssteeringwheels.com/productcart/pc/mainIndex.asp Now to finish the horn ring.
$610 with rechrome of separator rings. Koch’s provided touch up paint as requested. Attached are before and after pics. Currently working on horn ring which is now at chrome shop. Had to replace top ring (took from a ‘54 horn ring) and will fill groove to match original. Original emblem is in great shape and correct for a ‘53. Also have all horn ring guts which are very important. Will post pics when finished. Paid $130 for steering wheel which was in Virginia (I am in Reno, NV.)
Did you do the welding? I have a ring for a Merc I have been playing with, but have parked it for now
No. I found a local guy that heliarcs pot metal. He has been doing a lot of pot metal work and is quite good. Although I am skilled, I was not about to take a chance with such a rare ring.
Very nice. Is the emblem in the before pic for a 52? I wish I could find an NOS or really nice emblem for mine. I have a new style that some day I will adapt in, but would prefer a really nice original.
Thanks, mine emblem is a ‘53 Anniversary Emblem. The ‘54 is white and don’t know color of ‘52, but definitely not red. I found my wheel by posting on Facebook. Outside chance but it worked in one day. Good luck. Post some pics of yours.
52 is red, 53(anniversary) is red with script around the outside, and 54 is white and wheel is all white instead of black and white, I do believe. 53 anniversary ****on -
“52 is red, 53(anniversary) is red with script around the outside, and 54 is white and wheel is all white instead of black and white, I do believe.” Hmm... all news to me. ****on in picture looks like a Truck emblem. Never sa an all black wheel before. Can you point to any do***entation? My steering wheel came out of a ‘53.
I've seen the Anniversary emblem before, in other accessory wheels. The top half of that all black wheel is leather covered, so possibly white underneath(or recast in all black, you could do any color you wanted). My 52 is red and my dad had previous 52 accessory wheels with the red ****on. The car you took it out of could have easily had a different ****on swapped out. The 53 looks cool, but finding one is the tough part.
Thanks, that’s what I love about this group, learn something new all the time. Attached is a pic of the horn ****on emblem from a truck emblem which is quite similar to one I found as a repop. Then I found this https://www.ebay.com/itm/1953-53-FORD-50TH-ANNIVERSARY-CAR-HORN-****ON-PLASTIC-NEW-/151211703944. However, don’t think that fits the Accessory wheel. Also, MAC lists one that looks to be a duplicate of the one used on the Roadster.
Yeah, I think all the 53 Ford vehicles had that style of ****on in them. Finding one to fit the Accessory wheel is the tough part. Very little do***entation on the Accessory wheels overall.
Here is my ‘53 (?) Accessory horn ring emblem with no scripting. Anyone have a pic of one with scripting? Sure would be helpful. BTW CB186, would love to see pics of your wheel.
Thanks. 52 & 53 are the same, except for the horn ****on. Getting the horn to work was a pain, and took some time and machining.
Seeing as how there was no do***entation, the parts that were there(they all looked like they belonged) didnt function correctly by just bolting it all together. There is a foam ring, a plate, 3 plastic spacers with screws and a spring. I ended up making longer spacers and a plastic isolator and a bunch of fiddling around to get it working properly.
Steering Wheel installed. Horn ring is not perfect, but I am satisfied. Now to hook up horn wire from EPS which requires takin the column apart..ugh!
Why do you have to take the column apart to run a new horn wire? Mine just runs down the center of the column.
I installed Electric Power Steering which requires a nylon bushing, with a br*** ring around it, pressed onto the upper steering shaft it to make the horn work. The upper steering shaft (cut fron the original) has the horn wire run through it which exits through a drilled hole and is attached to the br*** ring. Then a switch with a spring loaded “pecker” rides on the br*** ring through a hole drilled in the column. When the horn ****on is pressed, it p***es a ground to the br*** ring, then to the pecker switch which is connected to the horn relay. The wire to the br*** ring dislodged requiring column dis***embly to reattach it. See photo attached which shows hole where switch resides. With the EPS, only the upper steering shaft can p*** the horn wire because the lower is blocked by the EPS ***embly.
