Trying to setup the handbrake on my 30 coupe. I'm running 40 Ford brakes all round, on the rear it looks like I'm missing two (2) small 'L' shaped brackets for the hand brake to work properly. The 'L' shaped brakets fits between the top of the right hand side brake shoe and the top of the hand brake lever that is hitched to the left hand side brake shoe. Does anybody have two (2) of these to sell to me, one for each side? Do I need anything else to get this to work, apart from cables etc.? The image below should make things clearer. In the rear brake diagram with the exploded view of components I'm after parts # 2108 (RH) 2109 (LH). A *****
I don't have the parts you need but you will also need the little "C" clips that hold the parts together.(#2106) One goes on the short leg of the 'L" piece you need. The other goes at the top of the handbrake operating lever.See photo.
I just noticed that the handbrake operating lever in your photo does not have the hole for the pin needed to hold in place the "L shaped" emergency link part #2108 that you need. As best I can tell the part number of the emergency brake hand operating lever shown in your photo is X1A 2110RH. The first number I can't read clearly so I put in the "X". The 1940 Ford emergency brake hand operating lever for the right side is 91A 2103 and it has the hole you need for the pin and "C" clip. I looked in the big Green Bible and can't find part # 2110. Is that an Austrailian number only? Maybe you can drill the needed hole.
The hole is in the shoe(front top) and currently has the pin installed. That is the pivot for the lever. He has it.
Thanks for the info. Anyone know if these small 'L' shaped gizmos can be bought new? Repopped? A *****
I just learned a lot. I'm going through a couple boxes of these emergency brake levers, and what I've come up with is that the part numbers 91A-2103 RH, 51A-2110 RH, 22350 RH (the latter two being replacement numbers) and all appear to be the same parts, barring the use of a clip (part #2106) which requires a post . This is found from a side-by-side comparison of the parts themselves. According to a thread on the Ford Barn, '39-'41 levers are different than '42-'48 levers, the difference being the #2106 clip used in the '39-'41 version. But, I also have in front of me both a '39-'41 backing plate and a '42-48 backing plate, where the entire above stated theory of clip #2106 is reversed, and the '42-'48 backing plates have the clip instead of the '39-'41, even the the diagram below shows the earlier model using the clip. See photos. So, my question is, where they made both ways, or is this the product of a clever re-builder who simply knew his or her part numbers? Also, see attached link: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?p=828633
No. The 40 Ford ( lower photo of right rear brake) brakes are Lockheed design where the larger shoe always goes on the front of each drum. The first photo ( left rear brakes)shows the Bendix brake design where the larger shoe always goes on the rear of the drum. You can see the difference in the brake shoe lengths in each photo.
in the diagram above it shows shoe with the longest fabric to front of car..?? But, pictures just above are opposite of each other, note friction material.. could it be because the one is self energizing...? adjustments totally different,, 40's have a cam adjustment, later have single star adjustment... guess I put mine on wrong, there was 3/8" less fabric between the two. not gonna change em...
I have original 1940 rear end - love to change to Bendix type like your top pic - but hate to spend the $600 to Bob Drake for the kit. Do you know any other more cost effective option?
I know that this thread is 2 years old but with no response to the question I thought maybe some one has tried since. I am considering the Speedway upgrade which is similar to the Drake. Is it an upgrade? I think, maybe I'm wrong, there is probably only one manufacturer/supplier of the actual parts. And they supply to the several comoanies that sell these kits.
I bought my complete front and rear Bolling Bros. Lincoln brakes from Cornhuskers Rod and Custom a few years ago. I wanted parts made in the USA. Plus, you can sell your OEM 40 brakes to recoup some of the cost. Give Gary a call as I think he will give you a cost effective price. If you buy them reuse your original Ford rear roller bearings. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cornhusker-Rod-Custom/291842711149759
