God bless Vern for sharing so much knowledge with the rest of us. His new book is awesome, although I don't agree with cutting and welding steering shafts to shorten. Other than that it sure is packed with helpful info. Thanks for sharing, Glynn.

Well worth the money, I’ve gone threw it 4 or 5 times already. My wife got it for me for Christmas via the rodders journal website

Building an A v8 model A tudor from a driving stocker to a driving hot tod. Way cool book with zoots and zoots of big pictures which us simpleton hot rodders can fully understand,
all done in ring binder format, Walks you through step by step the entire build.

  7. I've been through mine a few times in the last week. I pick up new information each time I go through it. Between this book and the first one, there is a wealth of information.

My buddy saw it laying on my work bench opened it up to a random page looked up at me and said "do they make one of these for my 68 vette?"

I haven't seen the book so I don't know just what method Vern used. But shortening a column is nothing new. So tell us how you would shorten a steering column/shaft without cutting and welding.

Well Jack it does have two ends, cutting & welding may be less expensive & quicker tho.

Bob I guess it would depend on what the ends were like. If they were splined and going to a u-joint it would be a lot simpler to cut and weld. Of course I'm not speaking of just a **** weld. I'd heavily V the joint, weld and then sleeve it and weld again. Years ago when building the COE I had I took over a foot out of a Chevy van column using that method

Cut, V, weld, sleeve, weld and pin. Probably the strongest part in the car. I'll bet Vern has shortened more than most of us have seen.

As far as the steering, If you do it right it is no big deal . I have machined , pined/sleaved and welded a few and never an issue. Have not seen the book yet.

unfortunately its more expensive for postage than it is for the book to get it to the UK. :( I was quoted $67 then there would be taxes and vat when it got here .. made it a bit pricey but looks like a good addition to any reference library..

IMO Here's a couple of examples of a steering column that should've been shortened. I can't imagine that being comfortable to drive very long 45792554-078-1921-Ford-T-Bucket.jpg 00O0O_52teLVqm9Ho_1200x900.jpg

  28. Couldn't guess how many columns I've shortened by cutting, welding and sleeve welding....but I'm still jacking up my cars under the center of the rear end...

The last big book I bought from England I waited until one of the family friends was coming over from the Motherland, and had it sent to her place over there a couple weeks before the trip.
Some friends and relatives are eager to help out this way, others I wouldn't ask.
