Can someone please tell me the way to repair what I believe is the gear box on my 50 Chevy sedan? It's leaking oil and I'm not sure if it's something like an oil ring that can be replaced or something else. And how does it come apart. I did started to remove the bolts seen on my picture and oil started coming out.
don't just start taking bolts out....read the shop manual first. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1949_53/09steering/9_01.HTM steering gear boxes are tricky. And they tend to leak, and they also require the correct lubricant (which might be hard to find, it's not oil, nor normal ch***is grease)
Wow you ain't kidding Squirrel. I don't think I ever want to touch it. I checked out the link with instructions and pretty intense. I don't think I could ever find the tools required to do the job. I know they sell a rebuilt kit but the replacing part worries me. For whatever reason it started leaking oil while we were putting in the new ******. It's weird. But thanks for the heads up. I have to figure out what to do now.
Do a search here, read the threads on your subject. 'Steering Box Leaks' you'll draw from great experience.
John Deere Corn Head grease seems to be a suitable lubricant for those older boxes, at least it is what I read, what I used in the 49 Ford gear box I put seals in and what will go in the stock box on the Stude. Good luck, I am always amazed at how Squirrel has info at his fingertips, I have some of the same info but I'd have another birthday before I could readily access it
The gear box lube specified for my '59 Ford is something that would be a chore to obtain. Here's a good thread from here, look at post #22. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/removing-rebuilding-51-chevy-steering-box.379170/
