Back in the '60's the magazine Mechanix Illustrated ran an article on Slo-Mo-Shun IV including plans. I built a balsa scale model, powered by an IC motor (1.5cc) , scrapped it only a few years ago.

    Hey Mo,

Stu’s AE Transmission Shop in NE Long Beach was very popular when we were all going to Lions and to high school. We heard that they were building something different and when they showed up at Lions, we just happened to be there. Different to say the least.

    1959 sidewinder with 1959 sound.

We all knew about the “Real” Sidewinder from Joe Mailliard/Paul Nicolini, but this one was its own creation and ideas. When all of the other racers were FEDs, this one stood out from all of the rest.. It was “doing its own thing…” THEN, another one popped up with a similar idea of a rear engine sidewinder race car.

The Stu’s AE Transmission Shop “mini sidewinder” was also from Long Beach, CA. Most of the local hot rodders went to Stu’s for their transmission woes. His version of the sidewinder was one of the only ones with an automatic transmission. "The SBC ran a 4 speed hydro sliced in the middle of its case, with a fabricated case aft of the slice for adapting the chain driven output shaft. Interestingly, it accepts a complete stock hydro pan. A larger gear attached to the rear wheel completes the complicated drive system."

This different take on a sidewinder was unusual to say the least. We did not see it later on at the drags. Many contacts later, no more information came from the present day Stu's Transmission Shop. Is it still stored somewhere under wraps?

Lincoln's Auto Wrecking Highway 99/Aurora Avenue North Seattle. Vettes, muscle cars, and tri five Chevys. Look close at the Vette just to the right of the 57 of to many doors in the original post, looks to maybe have an old style 3 point roll bar and hogged out wheel wells, or maybe it's a hallucination? Long gone now.
