Trying to get a 1954 fargo half ton running. Can someone explain the Hydrive to me? I'm putting it on different flathead six engine because the original was seized up. Does it need oil p***age to engine? can it be fill with oil separately? what is the best way to seal 3 piece housing? anyone halve pictures of a rebuild?

Hydrive was a unique version of Fluid Drive that I believe was one year only. It had a torque converter that was fed with oil from the engine. The engine/torque converter were completely separate from the transmission which had its own oil supply like a manual trans. Trans used 10 motor oil or today we would used TDH tractor oil, ISO32 grade.

You need the engine block with the oil p***ages in it. I suppose you might be able to jimmy something up with separate oil lines, etc but it's not worth the bother. You would be better off to put in a manual trans, or whatever came with the engine.

If it was mine I would either rebuild the original block, or change to a different transmission.

It might be possible to change to a Fluid Drive unit which is a sealed unit with self contained oil supply.

You do not state whether the truck was made in the US or Canada, they used different engines. Do you know the bore and stroke of the engine?
