Beautiful piece, Vicky! Hard to comprehend the hours of patience it took, what with the time to 'scale down', etc.
But back on the path, you seem to have walked right thru! Kudos. First instance I've seen (here) of such a large part 'printed'.
The guy that appeared on talk shows with his printed gun was an eye opener for me.
I predicted 'the perfect Stromberg 97', on down to 'counterfeit Norm Grabowski skulls', satirically and sarcastically.
Now I can see how this works. Incredible...Aircraft flew in 1905. Now this printer tech. It's ONLY 2017!

  3. Wow. I now know I had better cherish my original crossover pipe my buddy Tony gave me!

Someone already mentioned dentistry but I had to have a crown installed the other day, the dentist prepped the tooth, stuck a camera in my mouth and did a 3D picture, sent that to his printer in the back, made the permanent porcelain crown and stuck it in all in an hour!

You guys need to get up with the technology in 3D laser printing.
It can now be done in metal using laser powder bed printers producing forged quality metal parts.
I was at the AWS Fabtech show in Chicago in November and saw it in operation.

This last one is a picture of metal planetary gears that are one inch in diameter and
once they are printed they are free and spin like a planetary gear should and the clearances can be really tight as well.

I shot a short video of the powder bed printer making a set of seven like that.
I tried to post it but it’s too large a file.

Here’s another powder bed laser printer.

  6. Yep,
I have the file, so now I need a printer.
Any idea how much it costs?

Wow, I didn't see this thread until now. The machine in question is either a Faro ( https://www.faro.com/products/factory-metrology/faroarm/ ) or a
    Romer (http://www.hexagonmi.com/products/p...4ilLiboPrSxOhd4UoixeGOLCi5xKohJ0aAj2nEALw_wcB ) arm.
It is really just an advanced CMM (coordinate measuring machine). They are pretty common in the automotive engineering business. They are in the neighborhood of $200,000 just for the machine. Then you need the software to run them. I see you were running Polyworks software ( https://www.innovmetric.com/ ). I have been trained on Polyworks by one of the companies I have worked for recently. Excellent software and company. Great customer support. It can be used for metrology (inspection/vaidation) by overlaying the scan to an existing CAD model, or as you have used it, for reverse engineering provided you have CAD modeling software.
You are extremely lucky that there is someone near you that has a set-up that you can use for free. The software license from Polyworks is something like $30,000 plus a maintenance fee of $5000/yr. This technology however, opens up all manner of possibilities for the hot rodder/restorer.

  9. Oh hell no!
Let me rephrase, I don't need the equipment, I need a printing out fit to do it. (Aka printer)
Who much does it cost to print a part like this?
How long does it take- print time?
Hom much does the machine need to make an hour?
How much to print the $150.00 water cross over piece. ?

I found a company that will take my file and print a mold, in sand for casting. The molds would be single use and $350 a set. I can get a few poured for a case of beer.

Yes, those laser powder bed printers are seriously big and expensive machines.
I saw the latest and best from a lot of companies, the leaders right now seem to be a company called Trumpf.

They have a new US factory in Illinois I believe.

An idea would be to contact them to see if they can direct you to someone with their equipment who can print your part, either one or maybe a run of them.

In the future I believe it will be cheaper to print than to cast and easier with better quality too.

  12. It looks like it is anywhere from 2-18 cubic cm/hour I would imagine it would depend on the material and the complexity of the piece.

Trumpf has been around forever they have made high quality metal working machines since the 20's or 30's.

  13. The part's print properties were just under 48 cubic inches.
It had to be orientated corner to corner to fit on the table.
The one dude there also set it up on an angle so the printer could make the tube easier, it worked out that the printer was actually depositing material more of the run time. It needed more support material though.
I believe it was 28 hrs to print it.

  14. Wow. I would imagine that would cost you a bit more than $350 on one of these machines if you could find someone to do a one off for an individual off the street.

If you want to make money in the stock market, this is the tech you need to invest in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there are many funds available now holding 3D printing companies. This kind of shit is just in it's infancy.

I was really impressed by the new metal forming , welding and cutting, printing etc technology on display at the AWS Fabtech
    show in Chicago.
It was like How it’s made on steroids

This is absolutely incredible. The mind boggles at the possibilities this sort of technology presents.
