Technical Stainless steel I-beam axle

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Gasser1, Apr 4, 2018.

  1. Did they ever make a stainless steel droped I-beam axle??????
The reason I ask I got an old axle and4 link kit with a frame everything was stainless steel .
Axle is hard, when grinding through off yellow-orange sparks. But is magent.
My drill bits won't drill it like most axle.I can drill 17X1" holes in most axle with 1 bit this thing 1 bit does 1 hole if lucky.

The Deuce Factory produced a stainless I beam with filled ends for a number of years. They offered it plain or polished with or without holes. I have them under my deuce 3 window, deuce delivery and deuce 5 window. When they closed So-Cal sold them for a while but their cost got prohibitive and they stopped making them. The magnetism is due to the type of stainless used to make the axle. I have a new stainless refrigerator but you can still use magnets on the door for the grand kids pictures.

  3. The ends are not filled it also polish like stainless.
It was a very fuff finish. And had a1/2wide parting line.
I thought it was cast but does not work like cast 20180401_142940_Burst01.jpg

That sure looks like a forged axle and as krylon mentioned there are grades of stainless that are magnetic. The 400 series grades fall into that category and they are heat treatable.

Don't use ***anium coated drill bits on stainless they get too hot and you'll smoke them- find some good machinists drill bits

If it has a 1/2" parting line, its most likely forged. Think of the parting line on a crankshaft, wide is forged, narrow/sharp; cast.

Will the paint stick properly to the stainless or did you powdercoat it?

  13. Bead blasted it once smooth so paint should stick

A beautiful stainless axle and you painted it? Polished, it would look like jewelry.

True if you were going to paint it I bet someone would have swapped you an already drilled one plus beer for a stainless one

  18. Shinny does not fit this project.it is being built on the cheep and would look strang with just 1 polished or chrome part on it.
If I ever need it for something that needs a shinny axle I will swap it out.
