This was a weekly occurrence from our house in Long Beach. The towing going down Santa Fe Ave. to Wardlow Rd, to the entrance of Lions Dragstrip in 1960. It was a couple of backyard hot rodders in action.

This is what our 40 Willys looked like being towed to Lions behind our 1958 black Impala. It was a weekly happening until the end. It was a backyard hot rod/drag racer ready for some action. We could have driven it to Lions, after all, it was in the Street Gas Coupe and Sedan Cl***. It was only 2 miles away from our house, but the Moon Tank, inside, only held 2 gallons.

As two teenage hot rod enthusiasts back in the late 50s, we got involved in something we really enjoyed. After racing the black 348/280 hp 1958 Impala in the A/Stock cl*** with many trophies for rewards, we delved into something else to satisfy our needs. We saw an old 1940 Willys Coupe sitting in gr***y side yard and decided to make something out of it. Our friends had a 34 Ford Coupe and a sedan, but no one had a Willys Coupe.

At first, we ran a 283 SBC with 6 Strombergs in B/Gas. Then months later, we got a 671 Isky Gilmer Blower Kit and rebuilt the SBC to 292. Instant horsepower and that cool 671 sound…A few weeks after that, with a few, thick, steel plates welded into the trunk over the rear axle housing, we were able to drop down to the C/Gas cl*** until August 13, 1960. (Getting close to the National C/Gas record, by the time of the Detroit Nationals in 1960, was our goal.)

This is what the version that would have been driving back to the Detroit Nationals in 1960. The finished form included more speed goodies, Hilborn 2 port, C&O Hydro, M&H, Halibrands, full upholstery and paint, etc. (and a new surf wagon for the both of us...)
