The clutch was dragging on my 41 pickup. I adjusted it and wanted to check it was releasing properly.

I have described this technique many times but as they say a picture is worth a thousand words. If you are unsure, try this. If the clutch does not release you will be able to tell.

Not sure grinding on the gears is such a good idea.

With your engine running, it was painful listening to your first and reverse slider gear grinding against the cluster gear with the clutch not disengaged. Just wondering if you have ever rebuilt a transmission and saw all of those little pieces of metal in the oil.

Yeah, it doesn't sound too healthy. I don't have a trans cover or inspection cover on, so it probably does sound worse than normal. I have heard worse, though.

You're right. I emphasise more than once, to do this carefully. That said, if your clutch is not releasing properly and you crunch the gears every time you engage first or reverse, you'll risk causing proper damage. I do emphasise that care is needed, if you are not happy to do it don't do it.

I've been inside a few, don't worry. This is a method used within the automotive industry. I've been in transmission development in the Auto Industry for over 40 years, maybe I am a little more "at home" with it than someone hearing it for the first time.

Thanks for all the comments, not what I expected, but thanks nonetheless.
