The original poster has certainly got things going, but strangely enough we have never heard from him again.
As of this writing, he still has one post. But boy, it was a good one!

My eager anticipation of photos of the subject vehicle seems to be headed for disappointment.

Run repair plates, then the worst they (DMV) can say is get that thing off the road. All who advised going to them must never have been there! If you go looking for trouble, you'll probably find it. There are amphicars and in Boston duck boats- I wonder how they're registered?

I worked at a Amphicar dealer in Minnesota years ago. the cars had to have both license plates, and boat license on the front fenders, to be used on the roads and on the water.

I visit the CA DMV regularly. I am never there for more than 40-minutes, excluding finding parking.

Wow the Laws are very different in the USA Here in Windsor Ontario the vin numbers are yours if registered with no problems except the cops pulling you over and asking if you want to sell her lol just saying

Another reason NOT to live in M***.!! When I go to the M***. DMV, I usually pack a lunch.

  8. Anything that you or I may even remotely consider building with a gl*** replacement body would have never ever had a vin tag. I was going to use the exception being a Corvette but then it would not be a rust bucket.

I was looking at a '46 chevy the summer before I joined the HAMB. It had an original Missouri ***le in the sellers name and 4 flat tires. But it did have the original inline trotline weight in it. While I was looking at it there was also a State police officer looking at it, he introduced himself to me, informed me that he was an official state inspector for a living and that he could not verify the vin although he was interested in the car. I was more interested in an early '50s Dodge the guy had but the Mrs. Really liked the Chevy. Anyway I looked at the engine, got my pocket knife out and s****ed the numbers pad on the block and showed the cop the original number that matched the ***le.

The Cop was very polite though and asked me if he could buy the car or if I wanted it. I looked at the missus and she smiled and nodded and the officer bought the car.

Now for my official jailhouse legal advice, if its your car you have a ***le for it in your name, you know where the frame numbers are and they are intact and verifiable drive it. If you get yourself locked up put me on your visitors list I'll bring you smokes and some grease in a jar for when you run out of smokes.

Well THAT explains it. You are from California where *****s are in charge of p***ing asinine laws on a regular basis where they then get more *****s to enforce them. You guys also have those ***holes from the California auto repair bureau or something to that affect that also don't have a clue.

The OP was talking about HIS car and HIS situation. He has a fibergl*** body on an original frame that has been in his name for years. His frame stamped factory VIN matches HIS ***le. The VIN tag from the BODY was removed from the "car" when the car body was removed from the car. JUST LIKE YOU DO WHEN YOU BUILD A DUNE BUGGY ON A VW CH***IS. I guess people like you go around confi****ing dunebuggies too, huh? HIS question was basically can he attach the beat up tag, or get a duplicate tag and attach it to the fibergl*** body. MY answer was to avoid people just like YOU and that he does not need to do ANYTHING to keep his car, enjoy his car and even sell his car.

Your post PROVES my point that talking to ANYBODY at the DMV, ESPECIALLY someone from a California DMV is a really stupid idea because they will give the worst advice that will complicate your situation beyond belief. Your post proves that statement as FACT. Your post exemplifies the BS people like you make people go through.

Not only have I never had ANY issue with any car that I could not resolve, but NOBODY I have ever sold a car to has either for over 35 years.

I'd like to point out that there is a difference between running the car with no tag on the body and switching the tag to the body. The later is illegal anyway you look at it.

Man, that's an awful lot of internet anger, yelling, calling us all *****s-without any actual help. I'm not sure who made you the expert, but you surely aren't going about it in anyway that will win anyone to your side. In 40 years of buying and selling I find it generally worthwhile to stay on the same side of the law as the DMV. Gimpy presents a reasonable, cogent response-I'll think I stay with that. Best of luck to you. It's a discussion, not an argument, right?
