May be just what's needed but sorry to see the Spencer brothers out. I grew up racing there as a kid in the '60's. Spencer Saturday nights - King's (South Butler) Sunday mornings. Heard the South Butler strip is being revived too. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Article: Spencer Speedway sold to Long Island man New owner promises financial stability and more compe***ors at the 1/4 mile facility It had been a tumultuous decade for Spencer Speedway, located on Route 104 in the Town of Williamson. When the Spencer (Walter, Delbert and Merle) brothers decided to relinquish ownership of the 1/4 paved race track, it went through two different operators who failed to make a go of the popular facility. Along the way, court battles, pe***ions and a few angry residents upset at noise and crowds on the Friday stock car, Saturday drag races, hindered the tracks feasibility and events. After the Spencer brothers took back the 52 year-old track they built, both the Friday and Saturday night races languished. The family-owned facility was preparing for the 2006 season, when they were contacted by John White, a Long Island business man with a racing background. White, who has had 3 cars in his stable, sold a considerable amount of land and had the cash to make the Spencer brothers an offer they could not refuse. Along with Bob Stapelton, the operator and partner from Chemung Speedrome Raceway, located about a two-hour drive from Wayne County, White wants to turn Spencer Speedway into a top notch track. I want to put the controversy of the past behind us. We want to be a good neighbor. All the town board (Williamson) has to do it talk to the town board in Chemung on how it is going. What we have promised has been done and often exceeded, said White. White said they will be offering a $10,000 prize to any SST cl*** driver who wins both the Chemung and Spencer championships in one season. He added that the idea is to promote drivers from Chemung to travel and add more compe***ion to the Spencer card. The track will be NASCAR sanctioned for the Friday night stock car races and the NHR sanctioned drag races will continue on saturday nights. Some other ideas that have worked at Chemung, such as snowmobile races in the winter and drive-in movies during the summer may also be on the plate, as well as car shows. We want to do things that will be beneficial for the community. We want this (Spencer Speedway) to be a family friendly place for entertainment, added White.
Interesting.. That track's changed hands a few times in the past few years. there have been a lot of issues with noise at night from the neighbors, which from what i was told created a lot of problems. The tracks about 30 minutes from me and i've raced there myself.. It's actually only a 10th mile though, guess the writer didn't do enough research . I'd like to see thing's come about there myself and better the facility. Thanks for the info. Tony
At least they are not tearing it down. A friend of mine has won many races at that track and championships aswell.
and an update....(Wayne Co. Times 1/07) ---------------------------------------------------- Spencer Speedway joins NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Spencer Speedway 2006 SST champion, Mike Florio This year our drivers will have an excellent opportunity to challenge, not only for the National Whelen All American ***le, but the newly revised New York State Championship. John White announced that both of his tracks, Chemung Speedrome and Spencer Speedway will participate in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, formally known as the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series, in 2007. Drivers at both tracks will have to hold valid NASCAR Compe***ion Licenses to compete. No Spencer or Chemung track license program will be in place at either track for 2007. We are extremely proud to make our two tracks part of the NASCAR family of short tracks, stated track owner John White. This year our drivers will have an excellent opportunity to challenge, not only for the National Whelen All American ***le, but the newly revised New York State Championship. A driver will be able to use all of the points earned in the primary division at each track within a state to count towards that states ***le. Currently the New York State ***le looks to come down to someone who runs at Riverhead (Tour-type mods), Holland (SST), Chemung (SST) and/or Spencer (Tour-type mods). The National ***le will be determined by a drivers best 18 finishes from any NASCAR track in the country. The NASCAR Whelen All-American National ***le race will end on September 30. We have already heard from a number of drivers who will be at Spencer on Friday with their modifieds and then at Chemung with their SST Modifieds, continued White. The addition of the New York State ***le run should help increase the weekly fields at both facilities. The NASCAR Whelen New York State ***le is currently setup to pay $8,000 for first place, $4,000 for second place and $2,000 for third place in points. These amounts could increase depending on other tracks in New York participating in the Whelen All-American Series program, continued White. Currently plans call for a season opening practice session at Spencer on May 4, 2007, with the season getting under way the following Friday, May 11. We want to make sure our teams have full opportunity to earn points so we have added a Sunday rain date for each Friday show throughout the Spring at Spencer, White announced. We would make up a Friday rainout starting at Noon on that Sunday, with our expectation of being done by 5 p.m.. But I want everyone to understand we will be waiting out calling a rainout to the very last minute possible. Last year we were able to save two shows that would have otherwise been canceled by following this Last-Minute policy. Spencer Speedway, a flat half mile asphalt oval, is located just east of Rochester, NY, along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson. The track will be celebrating its 53rd year of motor sports compe***ion in 2007. The track opened in 1955 and has run each year since that time. Two-thousand and seven will mark the first full year under new management.
