So I found out today that there is a possibility that my dads gettin relocated to the New Hartford/ Utica area and im kinda leery of moving because I have it pretty good (car scene wise) and lots of places to learn about cars/body work/ etc around here. So I was wondering is there any Hambers out there and whats the car scene etc like?? Also Im 15 and get my license September 27th... What is the NY laws for gettin your permit/license because I know permits dont transfer so I will probably end up having to start over again. -Stephen
Gotta be 16 for a permit in NY. There's a lot of motorheads in the Utica area, pretty neat car show at the airforce base also. Your not too far from Syracuse so check out the "Nationals" this summer.
id like to add to that....16 for a permit and you have to have a licenced driver with you. after 6 mos you can apply for a licence but i think its limited to no later than 9 pm curfew till your 18 . buddy of mine works for Tucci in marcy they build some way cool stuff. tons of car related stuff to do in the summer. an hour and 45 to albany area. lots happening here also.
Also on the Permit thing, if you take an accredited Drivers Education course, which I highly recommend you do - (not a 3 day course, but like a semester at HS) you can get the after 9 privligages at 17 and a reduction in the insurance.
I am outside of Syracuse, NY about 35 miles from the Utica/New Hartford area. Lotsa gear heads up this way, crusie in most every night from May to September, lots of cr shows, good one at the Proctor Muesum of Art in Utica. Good Automotive program at SUNY Morrisville, both ***ociated and bachelors courses available. Several active car clubs in the area, lotsa roundy round racing, drag racing in Cicero, NY. NY is introducing a staggered licensing program for youthful drivers. Don't know all the facts but I believe they are mandating having a learners permit at least nine months prior to scheduling a road test for liscencing. Restricted license allows you to drive after 9 PM for work or school sponsored activities. I beleive you will now have a restricted liscense for a minimum of two years before getting a regular liscence. To operate a motorcylce, a seperate endor*****t is needed and a seperate road test. Here is a link for NY/PA car shows. http://holtononline.com/topsdown/carshows/shows.html
