Hello to all I have recently had the change to acquire a 1940 ford Tudor sedan. However, I am looking for anyone who may have more experience with buying these types of cars and their values. 1940 Ford Tudor Sedan All original Original Flathead V8 - out of the car and apart - needs rebuild Original transmission & rear diff setup. Toolbox has rust Some pinholes in the floor but overall in good shape Rear p***enger fender is pretty beat up Doors open and close well running boards have some rust All gl*** is there Interior pieces are there but need to be restored Sat in a garage for 40 years Car will roll around and other than the engine is all together. Clean and Clear ***le I believe that is it for now. If any info comes to mind I will certainly add to this post. The car is 98% there and is a survivor with minimal rust for it's age and others in similar condition. The seller is asking $4,800 for it but I am not sure if this is a fair price or not. I know these cars are getting harder to find so I don't want that to influence me to pay more than I should. I was originally told it was a coupe but it does turn out that is is a two door sedan. If there is more info needed to help with my questions, please ask and I will do my best to find the answer. Thanks in advance.
It's hard to say without seeing the car, or at least pictures. I am not an expert and I usually go with what is being sold online at the time. To me, $4800 sounds like a killer deal for what you described. Location is also going to play a part. I live in southern California and cars seem to sell for more down here. It all comes down to what you think is a fair price. Here are two examples I just found on Craigslist: https://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/d/1939-ford-deluxe/6562288406.html https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/cto/d/1940-ford-2-dr-sedan/6565011642.html First the 39 is only $3900, but it is a 4 door. Still cool though and I would love to have it. Second is a 40 for $6500. Total basket case, but there is someone out there that will most likely pay that price. Whats really important is if you feel that it is a good price.
Thank you for the input Cosmo50. I live in Texas so that helps with the rust issue for sure. This one needs work for sure but it appears to be a good survivor. The flathead V8 being apart was my biggest concern because any rust that the car does have appears to be in the areas where you would expect some rust on these cars. To me, the $4,800 is a fair price but since I have never purchased a car of this age I just wanted to pick some brains to be sure.
I think the big question here is how much you like a '40 tudor. If it's you life's quest and it's in the shape you say it is, grab it at that price before it's gone. If you really want a '34 3-window, things are a little different.
I am in the West Texas area. I wish I would have got some pictures but the car was up on the seller's lift and I just didn't get a chance to grab any pictures. This would be my first flathead to own which is why I am concerned that the engine is currently apart. However, I have rebuilt many different engines but never a flathead.
If the flathead is out of the car, save yourself some time and money by putting a 327 in it. If the body and frame are solid, that price is a deal. Better make up your mind before someone else grabs it.
It’s all in what the market will bring. I’ve bought & sold several 40’s and all but 1 was a 2 Dr Sedan. I’d say it’s a fair deal. There are a few around, been 1 here on H.A.M.B. for $5500., I think it’s in California. Good Luck! Keep us posted! Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I agree that the price is O.K. but the concern is if the motor is rebuildable or a boat anchor. Also, pictures would help.
Believe me, the 100 hp. engines were made for 40 Fords, don't waste time on an 85 unless you want to go places slow. 15 horsepower doesn't sound like a big difference but it is and they fit in real nice.
A 40 Ford 2 door sedan body style is not my cup of tea. A 40 coupe would be my choice. Over the years I've had a few cars that were flathead powered and was never satisfied with the performance. Your car, your choice, your money.
Sounds like a good deal. However, ask yourself why the engine was removed & dis***embled, from an otherwise decent car.
