Technical Swap meet scores

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by george.barnes.754, Apr 28, 2018.

  1. Went to the swap meet this morning, spent $50 and left with a 32 ford heavy axle, an A rear crossmember, a better 27 T cowl than what I have, and 4 houdallies. I think I did good. Anybody else make any awesome swap meet scores?

You didn’t include your location when you filled out your info so we don’t know where you are but from the amount of stuff you bought for $50 I do know you must be stuck in the early 1960’s. You will have a hard time even finding stuff like that at a swap in my neck of the woods these days.
Back in the ‘80’s I did score a nice, straight Mor-Drop Model A axle and square back spindles and tie rod for $15, probably my best find.

Few years back (3 or 4) at Fathers Day L.A. Roadsters swap I talked to a gent buying a new home, had a '34 Roadster project on the trailer, for sale. I said I knew a guy across the lot from him that was a sure buyer. Brought them together, the guy sold the '34, and they would be dropping the project off at the buyer's house in Bellflower.
For 'such a favor', the seller gave me a pair of bead-blasted '32 spindles, $10.

One more...I was at the Turlock swap, a 'T' parts seller I'd seen before had some springs, crossmembers, and such. A guy was asking about springs, he was giving him prices...the guy said, "Too high..." and walked off.
I bought a spring and a crossmember, rear 1921 style. He took my money, but acted like something wasn't right.
Got home, looked the things over, and saw they were marked in price. I had gotten a good deal, but felt like it was TOO good.
Next Turlock meet, (6 months later) I saw the same seller, lots of 'T' stuff...I walked up and said, "There was a mistake the last time I did business with you," and he stopped in his tracks.
I handed him a $20 bill, and said "I made a mistake, and owe you this." I mentioned a rear spring and early crossmember, and he said, "No...that's O.K., deal's a deal." I said, "Please...the deal was GREAT for me."
    Shook hands, made a friend.

    I scored a 55-64 Chevy 4.10 open center section for $15.00 last year at a N.H. swap.
But the best score for me was a new (but flash rusted) 29 roadster inner door skin for $60.00 at the final Amherst, N.H. swap meet. Seller had it marked $60.00, I asked if he would take $50.00, he yelled at me
"DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THOSE ARE GOING FOR?" I said yes and handed him the $60.00

As long as you use those "more than a bargain" parts from the old timer I am cool with it but it chaps my buns when some guy buys stuff like that and runs right back to his stall and sticks a high "hope some ****er will bite" price on it.
I can't remember getting too many deals that I can brag about but there may be some guys who bought pieces from me over the years that bragged what a deal they got as I usually take stuff to swap meets with the intent to get rid of it or sell it so I can buy what I want.
If I leave the house with enough cash to pay for my swapmeet space and not much more and come home with the parts I was wanting and maybe a bit more cash than I left with it was a good day.

    I see it like this.
I deal and collect in 18-19th century antiques. Mostly primitives.
When shopping. I will buy for two reasons. To make money on the resale so I can stay in business and this in turn allows me to continue my collecting.
I see nothing wrong with buying a piece that I am not interested in but can sell for a profit to feed my habit.
If you only want to sell to those who use the parts then you really will find you’ll be out of business before you know it by minimizing your clientele.
I always tell the seller I am a dealer. They usually give me a better price because if it.

People buy stuff for several reasons: I want it, I need it, I like it, I want to sell it, I’ve never seen that before, my dad had one just like it. It makes no difference why you buy it, it’s your money and when you buy it , it’s yours and you can do anything you want with it because you bought it with your money. I don’t care if a guy sells it to me for more than he paid for it, that’s called business. If it’s worth , to me, what he’s asking for it, I’m in! But, that’s just me. Bones

If I sell something for what I think is fair to me, I couldn't care less what you do with it. If you can sell it for twice what I sold it for, that good for you.
I have gotten good deals in years past. Seems like lately the only thing I see in swap meets are tires and late model garbage that you can find in a salvage yard.

  21. I have probably the only LHD 47 Chevy in these parts (they made and sold RHD only). I was setting up my wipers, and a lot of little arms and stuff were missing. Went to a local swap meet, & The first site I came across had something face down on the ground behind his table. I immediately recognized it, it was a LHD '47 dash, with all the wiper mechanim, guages, etc. All there. I asked how much, expecting the "well, that's a rare bit, everyone wants them, they only made 6 of those in that year" story, but he said "Twenty bucks". Man,you could smell the smoke from my $20 when I pulled it out so fast!

  22. My best buy was several ears ago. A vendor had a 1932 Ford PINES winter front hanging on the fence. I asked about it and got the story about how he got it when cleaning out some ones garage. The price was $ 50.00, I didn't try to beat him down. I just paid his price, said thank you, and walked away.

I have been going to swap meets for more than 40 years and have made some amazing scores,I've also made some poor choices with a few of my purchases.

Knowledge of what you are looking for is paramount,I scored a part from a gentleman's dollar parts box and knowing what I had in my hand I knew it's rarity was worth at least two hundred times what I paid for it.

I posted it on that internet bidding site and even I was blow away with what it brought, there is no doubt in my mind that I will never do that again but it's scores like that that keep you looking. HRP

I have been vending at swaps for close to 30 years. My good deals have always out weighed my bad ones many times over. But I have to say the last 5 or 6 years it has not been as much fun . But this last weekend I went to the Jefferson swap meet here in Wi and even though I could not seem to give anything away. I was walking around and saw this old Craftsman spray gun. I picked it up and the old guy { probley my age} says that he bought a new 5 hp compressor from Sears back in 1970 and the gun was part of the deal. He had never used it. It still had the hand drawn cartoon instruction sheet, the pickup strainer and the extra fluid cap still in a little envelope! Lol Then I tell him that my Dad bought a new compressor for his cabinet shop back in 1968 and it came with the same gun which I used in 1970 to do my first paint job when I was 15 ! He was only asking $10 for it , did not even think of ****ering, lol! It is now in the display cabinet in my man cave in the shop. So this show was fun even if it was only for a moment. Larry

At the Dearborn Swap Meet a guy had a stack of 4 br*** era doors. For $40! Wooden framed with hinges and latch hardware. I asked "What do they fit?"
He said if he knew what they fit they'd be a priced lot more than $40.
    Bought 'em.
    Built this tub.
    Great fun car.
    P.S They were from a 1916 Maxwell. hottub01.jpg

Speedway motors held it's annual parking lot swap meet Saturday. I sold and afterwards I walked around...found a pair of 455 Pontiac 6X heads for $100. They also came with a box of valve springs, new valves [2.11s and 1.66s] and a new M-54A Melling oil pump. Thought I hit a home run 'till I got home and checked the stamped numbers against a chart to find one was 94CC and one was 100 CC...DOH!
Oh well, the box of parts was cool...especially the new valves.

2007 or so Fall Jefferson WI swap. One of the rare Saturdays when it was stinking hot. So steamy the Big Bar vendors couldn't keep up.
The bumper core prices were high and we had brought down about 40 to drop off and having pre-arranged the sale the money was waiting.
Got paid and my buddy and I were heading to the south end to see if there was anything worth buying.
Heading north about 50 yards from the core buyers were a pair of guys dragging bumpers. Not just any bumpers,oh no. These were 1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser bumpers.M***IVE bumpers.
Anywho, the guys had stopped and were about done in by the heat. The friend who had been coerced into helping his buddy drag them was complaining and the owner was just standing there panting and dripping sweat.
We asked where they were going and the one guy said they were going to core the bumpers but for all he cared we could have them.He didn't care anymore. All he wanted was to get back to his swap space and drink beer.
We took him up on the offer and got his swap space number.Brought the trailer down, threw the bumpers in and made the 50 yard drive to collect the $175 per bumper core.
Had a twelve pack in the cooler for when friends stopped by our swap space so we dropped that off to our new bestest buddy. He was sooooo happy.
Might not have been the biggest money score at a swap meet but my buddy and I still laugh about that deal
