I am still weighing the benefits of which ****** behind my 34 with 8BA and ran across this old ebay item. 1968 Mustang 1 1/16-10 spline top loader with T-176 top shifter. What is this all about? Sorry if I missed any prior info but I did a search and found nothing. Whats a T-176 and what 68 mustang uses a wide ratio? The item was offered with an offy to flat adapter. Thanks

    in the 80's I ran an 8BA/ 4 gear/ bronco...
some bells/trannies had 2 bolt patterns from the bell to ******... I used the smaller one with a '66 4speed...
    .
not at all sure but... memory says I had to have the center hole enlarged slightly.

Isn't that top shift tower and shift fork converted over from a jeep.

T-176 is the Jeep 4 speed. Ford sold the toploader design to Tremec, who made 3 and 4 speeds for Jeep using a top cover shifter. They can be swapped to the Ford transmissions with some clearance grinding on the case.

Wide ratio(2.78 first) was the standard 4 speed on small blocks. Close ratio(2.32) was standard with high performance engines and part of options like Drag Pack. It needs the 4.11 or 4.56 rear axle to work well. Big blocks got the close ratio standard.

Some photos of a mid '60's Mustang top loader with a Jeep T-176 shift tower. It has a MEC adapter to allow it to bolt to a 59 series or an 8ba using a 1/2 bell from a truck or a Merc. IMG_3248.JPG IMG_3249.JPG

I like the look of that shifter coming out in the area my ford is. The T5 S10 is still located quite a ways back. Anyone have a setup T176 and 4 sp like 5150 shows for sale?
Just an observation, but the close ratio would seem the better choice if you are using the common 4.11 Ford banjo rear axle. So the trans is a Borg and Warner T-10 correct?

That's right. Also need to add a piece for top left mounting hole. I use the Ford 3 speed aluminum overdrive out of a mid 80's Ford pickup.

No the trans isn't a BW T-10. It was made by Ford to replace the T-10. This is from Wikipedia:
This transmission is also known as the Tremec T-170, HEH, or RUG depending on the year(s) of production.[1] At some point in the early 70's production was moved to Mexico and the name was changed to Tremec. On another note, I doubt I'll ever get around to installing my trans in my '39 p/u and might consider selling it. PM me if interested.

Got one in my 31 roadster with an 8BA. Did the conversion myself. Not too difficult to do. Opened the register hole in the flatty bell housing but can also turn down the input bearing retainer. The 66 top loader has both sets of bolt holes and lined with the flatty pressed steel bell housing.

Most of the 3 and 4 speed toploaders will take the Jeep shifters, but as I learned the 3spd HD RAT code case will not take the T150 shifter as a bolt on. Just something to keep in mind if you’re looking to do the Jeep shifter on one.

I used the 3-speed toploader with the Jeep T-150 shifter. The trans output has the yoke for a U-joint, so I have a lengthened front driveshaft with a slip joint, that came from a K5 Blazer 4wd. I also use a modified trans front snout from a Saginaw 4-speed. This allows use of the Speedway hydraulic clutch that is intended for Chevys, and the O.D. fit the 1949 bellhousing like it was made for it. PM me if you want more info on this.

    Model Engineering (330) 644-3450.
They advertise in Hemmings. Not sure if they have a web site anymore. The one they used to have wasn't very good. Best to call and leave a message. They will call you back but it might take a day or so.

This is my 8-BA with a ford truck bellhousing and hogshead with an adapter that was used to hook what the seller called a "Ford 4 speed" to the hogshead. Basically an early top loader with a Jeep shifter on it.

That flathead came out of this "huntin rig"

Have you got the smaller pattern 65 or older Ford trans or the larger 65 or later one?
There are some adapters here that may be what you are looking for.

Old post but GM transmission plant went on strike in 1865 and the Pontiac-Buick -and Ford used heavy duty top loaders with fine spline and course spline. I had a '65 Buick Skylark 401ci with a top loader in 1967. My friend had a '65 Pontiac Catalina with a top loader and fine spline. They have Ford and GM bolt patterns and cast iron. Another friend still has the transmissions and shifters in good working condition if someone needs them.
