Does anyone know if it’s possible to add an aftermarket steering column to a 1951 Buick. Do they use the same steering box as a 1951 Chevy? What is the shaft diameter? I have to either shorten this column or add an aftermarket.
I don't see why not all though the body is a bit bulky where the steering shaft exit's. The shaft will be 3/4" and is easy enough to install a coupler onto after cutting the shaft to length. Here's your box > https://www.hometownbuick.com/1951-buick-steering-gear-tie-rods/ As for interchange with a Chevy, someone else may know. But I doubt it.
Shortening it would be the simplest and cheapest solution. If you change it you will have to rewire the turn signals, horn, make new mounts, and a connector to connect the old sector to the new column, and get a new steering wheel.
Well, I’m going to have to rewrite it anyway. The wiring is completely shot, it’s just a fire waiting to happen
Also you will need to do something with the trans shifter if you change the column and still have the original transmission.
Well it’s getting a 700r4 and whatever column I get will still be column shifter. So I should be able to adapt that to the 700 easily....I think at least
