Changing gears out in ford 9”. Got pinion preload and carrier preload set. Just want to see what you guys think of the pattern. Not sure whether or not to adjust shims on pinion or if it’s ok. To me, Coast side looks low (toe), but drive side looks good. However, haven’t done a rear before. Thanks in advance.
Looks too deep in the tooth. Pattern should be more centered or slightly more to the outer side of the tooth without running off the edge.
And don’t pay too much mind to the coast pattern. Set the drive side, and let the coast be what it be, within reason.
I'm might be an idiot, and didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night....but I've never bothered to look at the coast side, just the drive side. My mileage didn't vary...
Thanks guys. I put it in once and it was howling a bit. Don’t know if part of that is because I went from 2.73’s to 3.70’s.?? Also, I sit right at the rear so if it’s making noise, I’ll hear it. Seems like coast isn’t as important? I just started looking at why I heard howling on deceleration and that’s what popped up. I’ve got a set of pinion shims coming tomorrow so I’ll decrease it a bit and see where my pattern goes from there. Thanks sheep dip for the visual chart and thanks everyone for the replies!
My 9" with new ring and pinion and new clutches. Has been setting in a a warm place for 6 months so pattern starting to smear.
The coast side/un-driven flank in this type of application is not necessary to evaluate. In dual input double helical gear boxes yes but not in this case.
