flame thrower idea

  1. I've been wanting to run a propane set-up for a mild flame thrower (I guess that's an oxy-moron). What about a glow plug set ino the exhaust tip and a fuel injector spraying the propane onto it?
From in the car, I'd heat the glow plug, turn the propane on, and hit the injector switch to "squirt". Will it work?

you're better off using a nitrous fogger nozzel in the tailpipe with a nitrous solenoid controling the flow of the propane, it would be a lot easier to fab that up considering the fogger nozzel already has the threads ready to be fitted into a pipe.

  3. What about pressure? Is the "Coleman Propane Bottle" enough?

I use a B-B-Q bottle with a nitros purge valve, works great. I just plumbed in to my zoomies, hit the spark push the purge button, wooof, fire higher then the roof of my 28 :D
I have to resize a pic some how and I post.

  5. ALRIGHT! That's the ticket I'm looking for. Any more details to share? Specifics?
I keep thinking a diesel glow plug would be better than a spark plug.

i think a spark plug would be better then a glow plug, simply because of the open flame

when i built my kit i used this site http://www.tnga.org/Tech/flame_throwers.htm
and the parts listed i think i spent about 18 dollars minus the coils building it.

its a great refrence. in the article they talk about using a choke to make your engine run rich and igniting that in the tail pipe but that causes lots of excessive wear on the motor the propane works well

I used nitrous foggers and it worked great, the only problem I had with my flame throwers was fouling the plugs.

yeah i've had the same problem, so make the plugs easy to change

  9. spark plugs work the best with either a foger nozzel or a pice of tube hooked to a selinoid for either fuel or propane i yse pripane because it just lights ezier

If I may be a little negative here; how will you flamethrower folks feel when someone gets toasted by one of these toys?

Wait a second. Didn't you post earlier that you'd driven 120mph on I-10?
Yeah, you're a regular fucking crusader for safety.

Umm, don't walk behind a car throwing flames! Kinda like not sticking your tongue in a fan blade!

OK....as for the rest of the story......
I took a distribtor cut it down wired to a coil and powered by a
electric water pump motor. gearing is one to one,,,flip a switch
motor turns dist. witch sparks the plugs at the end of zoomies,
then just hit the purge button, it injects propane,,,,FLAMES :D :D
and how about this,,,the motor does NOT have to be running ether.
ask 40studedude, he stands way back.... I still can't resize a pic yet.

just another idea.ether, you know starter fluid. on big trucks they have everything you need its an ether injection system for winter time start up. go to your local big truck wrecking yard and rob a complete system maybe get a couple of glow plugs too.any way ether burns cleaner..and alot hotter too so it wont foul what ever ignitor you chose and your not washin gas down your cyl.walls so its way better for your motor.set the ether nozzles about a foot up the pipe and your igniter about six inches from the end of your tail pipe.another plus is when you light it up you only need a spark to start it then it will keep burnin till you lift off the button what fun!! impress your friends!

I have had better luck with glowplugs than sparkplugs. I wired the glowplugs "older ford style, with the spade on top" to a toggle to turn them on when needed. I have a frame rail mount high pressure fuel pump on each side.Hooked up to a 12v source on a momentary push button switch. Made lines from 1/4 brake line. Flattened the end "like an early 70's metal washer jet. Flip on the glow plug, hit the momentary switch. PRESTO!!! easily 15ft flames. I don't endorse doing this in any way. I am no professional. Just a pyro!

  25. how do you 'fire' up the glow plugs? I know nothing about them...

I am pretty sure you just give then 12 volts. they dont need flashes of power like a spark plug. They just get hot and glow. Sort of like an electric stove.

Down here we use a kit that cuts spark to the motor to the two coils out back to light the vapor via spark plugs then hit the switch to light her up. thats cool but I have 3 9 pound propane bottels in back with gas selinoid's . Two hooked up to work together and one for just a bit more wow. These propane bottels have been modified to suck liquid from the bottom rather than vapor from the top. BIG flames now.I'll poast some pics tonight my time.

the only thing i dont like about this idea, is you can hear the motor wind up the distribtor, other then that its a great way to make it work

Coleman stove fuel makes a prettier flame. You can use a heater blower motor and make a plate for a set of points. Use a nut as the actuator cam, ran that for a while and worked well. Jay
