Great pic’s, I’ve made many of the same stops but always neat to see a new slant from others. Stay safe and enjoy!
So today started off in Auburn with steady rain falling. We ditched the plan to go back to the Auction Americas venue to check out the swap meet again and there was a Nash event being held there also. Several of the Nash guys were at our Hotel. I think they are all older than their cars!! Hit the road and did well on a back road towards Ypsilanti and then it all went pear shaped. The rain was bucketing down, the wipers stopped and the Garmin ***** was getting us screwed up. Finally made it to the Motel in Allen Park and got unpacked. One of the HAMBERS who has been in contact with me (Mr Harley here) was a great help and we needed a 4 post hoist to check some things and he directed us to Duane at Guardian Auto Repairs. These guys were outstanding and solved a problem we had with the front end. We had lots more trouble with road closures and once again the Garmin ***** didn't help. We spent an hour to do a short distance to get to the shop. Anyway all good now. Turned out to be two loose bolts holding the left side upper control arm. Also did a grease on the front and all the squeaks and rattles are gone. Raining here still tonight and hopefully will fine up tomorrow. Then time for a clean up as the car is filthy. Here are the Nash cars we saw.
Glad to hear Duane was able to help you out. I've known him and his family for years, good people. Unfortunately, the weather didn't give you a very good welcome to the Downriver area and the forecast doesn't look much better. Good time to visit the Henry Ford Museum. Being Mother's Day weekend there isn't a lot of car things going on this weekend in the area.
Those guys were great. Nothing was too much trouble and wouldn't take any payment for work done. I will think of something via Harley 51(Norm) to give them. First thing tomorrow if weather permits is a good clean of the Hudson. Then some decisions of what to do. We have a friend arriving on Sunday night and will do all the Ford stuff with him Monday and Tuesday. Would like to see the Edsel and Eleanor Ford house and maybe a side trip to Ypsilanti for the Hudson museum.
I'm near the Mustang plant about 2 miles south of Guardian's West Road shop if you need an indoor place to clean or do more maintenance on the car.
Welcome to the Motor City....we have 2 seasons..winter and road construction...weathers gonna be **** today...tomorrow looks ok...and Monday will be outstanding. You can walk the grounds of Henry’s Home still I think.
Today we had the grand tour of some legendary car builders courtesy of Mr Harley here on the HAMB. Visited Teddie Z who is Bill Hines nephew then Chuck Miller's incredible shop, and then onto The Boogie Man's place. Chuck Miller won the Ridler in 1968 and we saw some of his work on his own cars and in his man cave.
The Boogie Man builds nice cars but probably not HAMB material but still beautiful work. The second picture is one of Bill Hines cigars and a piece of lead below and the other one is a candy painted cigar. The station wagon was found in the Arizona desert and Teddie paid $1100 for it and the left side was full of bullet holes. The last picture is his first car that he and Bill Hines custonised when he was in high school
The Boogie Man builds nice cars but more street rods than traditional hot rods. I have included a photo of a Model A Tudor he is doing for SEMA just to show the detail of work. The rear wheels can go but the work is great.
You got to meet not only great hot rodders but great guys today. For those who the name Chuck Miller doesn't ring a bell, here are some of his famous builds :
Paul, Nice meeting you and Bill today. Thanks for a great day talking cars and learning about the car scene down under. Happy Trails on the rest of your trip. Enjoy and keep us all informed with your trip pics.
Heads up if you're near Virginia this weekend! Eastern Regional Meet -- May 17-20, 2018 -- Front Royal, VA We welcome Hudson enthusiasts to join us in Front Royal, Va. on May 17, 18, 19 and 20, 2018 for the Eastern Regional Meet (which, this year, incorporates "Doc's Apple Blossom Meet", now in its 55th year)
So yesterday was a visit to Edsel and Eleanor Ford's house and it was well worth the visit. Just great history there and an eye for detail in the design and fitout of the house. Absolutely beautiful. Today was River Rouge plant and that was outstanding. Unfortunately the line building the F150's wasn't running. Apparently one of the suppliers of parts had a fire and that has halted production. Would have been great to see it in operation but still a good tour. Then back to the Henry Ford Museum and once again a great experience. Maybe post a few pictures but more about history than traditional hot rodding although I can find a few pictures that will be acceptable here. Late at night now so a job for the morning.
Thanks for sharing your trip with us! Bummed I couldn't make the Stray Kat and meet you in person. Will you be here long enough to hit the Custom Car Revival in Indy early June?
A little catch up time. Did the Hudson Museum in Ypsilanti and that was very good. The first pictures were from a gallery that showed the history of hot rodding in Ypsilanti. Left Dearborn on Wednesday and headed west to the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners. Outstanding!! The cars displayed there are beautiful and a place to put on your to do list. Then moved on today to the Studebaker Museum and another that should be on everyone's list. I didn't realise the history of Studebaker and the incredible cars they produced. Pictures later on this one.
I’m glad things worked out for you here in Detroit, of course you leave and the weather turns perfect. I was hoping I’d see you on 94 Wednesday evening coming back from Chicago. Too bad we couldn’t have met face to face, but thanks for the call...and see I told ya the Hudson museum was cool. Did ya eat at Sidetrack? Make it to Henry’s home?

Lots to catch up on.Did the Gilmore Museum on Wednesday and that was excellent. Stayed in Plainwell that night. Then next stop was Le Claire with nothing except driving that day to get there.Next morning was a photo opportunity at American Pickers shop. The stars were all in town but filming somewhere else. Then another big drive to get to Lincoln NE. It was a hard slog on I80 with LOTS of traffic. Today was American Museum of Speed(Speedway Motors) and then onto Kearney for the Cl***ic Car Collection. The Speed Bill Smith collection is outstanding and should be on any car nuts list. Drove some of the Lincoln Highway from Grand Island to Lexington. Attached some photos from American Pickers and a lot of rusty cars I found in Lincoln on the way to the museum. PS. Words are hard to describe the incredible collection am***ed by Speedy Bill and you need hours to look at everything. On the next "reply" will be some teaser shots from the museum.
Wow! Thanks for all the great pics and stories! I did get to check out your car in Dewey, but didn't ever catch up and meet you personally. Looks like a great trip so far!
Been quiet for the past few days, just lots of driving. Sunday was Lexington NE to Trinidad, then Monday we got into Gallup NM. Today(Tuesday) we head for Needles CA and Wednesday onto San Luis Obispo. Thursday I will be spending attending to a major clean of the car and check a few mechanical issues. We were experiencing a strong exhaust smell for a day or so. By luck we pulled into a tire service to check the tire pressures and they had a 4 post hoist. A quick check and we found an exhaust bracket that was welded directly to the muffler had pulled away and left a hole in the muffler. They had a local welder who came over with portable gear and fixed it and we were back on the road in less than an hour. And no carbon monoxide poisoning!!. Not much in the way of photos today. Spotted an early 50's Packard on a trailer and the Hudson at the historic El Rancho Hotel.
