Hey everyone, I'm in the process of pitching a tv show about traditional hot rods and customs, but before that happens, I was wondering if you all could help me out with some of your most and least favorite shows currently airing. Thanks.
Rides and Overhaulin are cool, American Hot Rod isnt, I have mixed feelings about Wrecks to Riches...
Don’t misuse the term ‘rat rod’ and don’t create your own spelling for words such as custom (kustom) or rods (rodzzz) and you are off to a good start. The ‘Rides’ episode that showed the Choppers was the only one of these type of shows that I watched all the way through. The rest seem to get campy or go too off topic.
i like rides, hate american hot rod. it would be awesome to have a traditional rod & custom show!!!!!.
51 - If this is to be a "car building" format, see if you can talk someone into concentrating on the actual work at hand instead of the insipid "drama" that makes up most of the shows currently being aired. It would also be nice to see something involving construction methods other than bolting on/in finished parts. Favorites? Perhaps "Rides". While they don't always show much building technique, they seem to keep the subject matter varied. I can't think of any others - including the "bike" stuff that holds my interest for more than a few minutes.
Junkyard wars. I would buy the whole set if I found it. Pinks had a nice premise, but the end product is a little too much drama, not enough racing. Some of the Rides episodes are really well done. Here's a novel idea, don't base it out of SoCal, there are other places in the world. English/ European trad rods would make a few good episodes.
The premise of the show will be based upon the build(s) of traditional hot rods, customs, & lowriders without all the fakeness of every other show on tv right now. Keep the suggestions coming. If you feel like there's something specific you want to see on the show please feel free to share your ideas as well. Thanks!
"Rides" is the best,no question, followed by Biker Build Off. American Hot Rod,American Chopper,Build or Bust,Pinks,Texas Hardtails, and all the overglorified infomercial "programs" on Spike, all ****. If I want to see people arguing about Nothing,I'll go to Work. Or visit my Relatives. My all time favorites were Junkyard Wars;and the World of Outlaws, back when Nashville broadcast the races live.
Too much 'drama" on most. Maybe sponsers could be tool mfg.. Welders, etc, Actually building stuff, not "buy it in a kit/box.com' Sparky.
come to think of it probably the most memorable episodes of anyhting car related i have ever seen are as follows: Rides: the shifters "bad news" build. very informative and no BS Biker Build off: the indian larry episodes, and cole foster episodes. i can't remember i think it was on rides but it was an episode on lowriding. informative and plain ol' killer!
Wrecks to Riches blows. Barry White is almost as gay as Boyd and Paul Tetul. Rides is good. Pinks use to be good, kinda getting lame lately. Monster Garage isn't bad either.
Iwould have to agree to with the rest of the crowd on this one "Rides" is the best "American Hot Rods" just ****s there is no point to it that I can see. "OVERHAULN" has some pretty good episodes ever once and awhile
if you do it the way they do THE NEW YANKEE WORKSHOP on PBS you will get it right. if youve never seen the show, give it alook, and you will see what i mean. riverrat
Hot damn, you've got it there. We have tons of very cool home building shows without all the drama, just watch saturday or sunday mornings and you'll see plenty just like yankee. THATS how it needs to be done! Cut all the **** and just make a good, informitive show. Maybe Austin TX. would be a good home base, seems allot of cool stuff is coming out of TX. right now and that gets you out of all the Jesse James drama queen L.A. ********. Maybe get the Dirty Clan as your hosts That would give you your entertainment hahaha. Oh, my votes are also for Rides, then Overhaulin, sometimes the pranks drive me to change the channel, but Chip is still one hell of a builder and I always pick up cool tricks watching that show. Scot
IMO, Barry's TV show cars stink. Its disingenuous at best and outright deceptive at worst to create a fake out of junk and then call it a GTX or GTO. Mostly you have to be pretty amazed to see him sell these FAKE GTX's and FAKE GTO's to these dumb***es with no car-smarts. Holy ****, that many dinero will buy a couple of nice REAL GTO's. And gee, he sure has a nice humble personality, too. Him and Boyd - same kind of guy, different show. New Yankee Workshop idea is killer, but it would be a hard sell to TLC, Disc, or the NASCAR channel (Speed).
I was going to list all of the things I hate and like about current shows but these guys have already done that. You seem to be on the right track. The other show I like is Car Crazy but only for the interviews with the current and old time car guys Visits to palces like Rollin' Bones, Gary Choppit and other builders of cool rides would be a plus. I hate all of the drama the most.It makes everyone look stupid and self centered.
Take two guys garage and keep it just to pre 64 cars. I really can't stand the latest crop of shows on spike, all they do is yell and bolt on summit catalog parts. It seems they take clean cars, unbolt everything, paint, then rebolt with chrome, next show repeat. No drama, no "getting to know" the builders just build the cars, show how to do things like chopping a top, leading, suspension retrofit, airbags. For once take a car that isn't from southern california that's been sitting in a garage and restore it, something that has holes in the floor when it first comes in with critters running out of the trunk.
I third that. ^^^ The world has already seen enough "two guys bolt on a brand new carburetor", but you gotta avoid the drama like others mentioned. All the while, it can be kinda cool to show CHARACTERS as well as PARTS. The characters will keep it interesting... the Rides episode of the Burbank Choppers is a primo example. And if there is a host and/or hostess, make sure they make it believable that they really are into the cars they're talking about... even if it's just a voice-over. Doesn't matter if they really ARE into cars (but it helps)... I just need to BELIEVE they are.
I don't know about any of you, but I just can't see door seals installed on a Camaro too many times. Here's a wacky thought, how 'bout you get tool companies to sponsor the show instead of aftermarket parts manufacturers, Miller welders, Snap-on, etc. That way you'd learn HOW to use the tools to put on ANYTHING instead of how to put on a sponsors product. Traditional guys are opposed to buying modern tools to put together junkyard parts. The reality/game show is for people who can't convey why this is entertaining for us to begin with.
You should have a show that visits little shops, neat junkyards, private collections and people's garages that are building traditional rods all across the USA (and Canada and maybe even across the pond on occasion). AND you should let me, a girl who actually knows about cars, host it!
Rides is the best in my book. Chop, cut, rebuild is just OK - a little too bland. American Hotrod, American Chopper, etc - BLOWS!! Too much drama! You said you want to pitch a show about Traditional Hotrods, not car culture - right? The only thing that would torque me is if you make a low rent, trashy - greaseball show and call it "traditional". A little culture is cool - but please don't make it a rat rod drama (everyone know how Hollywood can twist thing up for ratings).
-Anything with traditional hot rods is cool. The Rides episode with the Shifters was excellent. -absolutely NO hawiian shirts though!
overhaulin, Rides, Trucks with Stacey David when he's building stuff from scratch, and even that show with the guy with the big moustache is pretty good sometimes when he's out and about something like the choppers episode of rides or MFS with the 3 day Tuck roadster build maybe a show in how to correctly grease and comb your hair, roll your cuffs, etc wrecks to riches is even worse than american hotrod
I'll say this... If we are the target audience...(I doubt that) drop the ********. I change the channel when they pull the "pranks". My skin starts to crawl. Same thing for the temper tantrums. I don't find arguing entertaining. Several of my friends say they won't watch for the same reasons. We know it's all ******** and that is a definate turn off. Show more of the fitting and fussing that really takes place. There is more to building a hot rod than bolting on 1-800 parts. Several years ago there was a show that do***ented the restoration of a 65? Mustang. Cool show that must not have sold enough T shirts and autographed photographs to do it again.
