Longtime friend called me last night, has a 37 ford in the shop with brake issues. It has stepped wheel cyls. ( large bore one end , small bore opposite end of same cyl). In the front- the small bore faces forward, in the rear- large bore faces forward. Is this correct placement?? Gotta be someone on here who knows fords. Any help I could pass along would be appreciated.
Ford had manual breaks until 1939. He's obviously has some other brake system adapted to the car. The stepped wheel cylinder is used to compensate for a faster rate of wear on the front shoe than on the rear shoe because of the self-energizing action of the brakes. This condition requires a stepped wheel cylinder with two bore sizes.
you will need to determine what brakes have been adapted as 1937 fords were still mechanical....first hyd brakes on Ford was 1939
The '37 has been modified with later hydraulic brakes, '39 to '48. The front wheel cylinders as installed are in- correct, rears are good. The large end of the cylinder faces forward on all 4 wheels. Also, the long brake lining on all 4 wheels faces forward, short lining to the rear. One more item, if the backing plates have lower adjusters along with the upper adjusters, that makes the brakes '39 to '42. If only upper adjusters, (11/16" hex) they are '46 to '48.
