Yes, but your state legislature only meets for a month every two years. Thus you probably aren't trying to beat down legislation to provide universal health care, free health care to illegal aliens, banning display of the Christian Bible in public places, confi****ion of private land that has poop from blunt-nosed leopard lizards, a**** some really ominous legislation. And no 10% income tax, and no $4 gasoline (soon to go up another $0.75 with a new tax). And trust me, Calif property taxes will skyrocket soon. They are diligently looking for a way around Prop. 13.
My parents moved to Wimberley recently, right in the middle of the area you describe. I stayed with them one week because my corporate office is only 18 miles away. It took over an hour to get the office. To HELL with that kind of traffic every day. It was beautiful country even five years ago, now it's a bunch of criss-crossing two lane highways loaded down with new neighborhoods and apartments and strip shopping centers and silver sedans. Ruined, frankly. If you're looking to have some land and a little space, I'd start looking further out. But expect to have neighbors in the next couple of years anyway.
Better have some deep pockets too if you are looking for a ready-built place like you describe in the Hill Country. It's one of the hottest areas right now. North Texas is growing too but land is a bit cheaper as long as you are not in a county adjacent to Dallas or Tarrant counties.
