Has anyone ever built their own custom subframe for a model A? I have plans to build one out of thin rectangular tubing so i can avoid having to put wood spacers back in and have added strength. The original subrails are complete trash from the b pillar back, so I plan on cutting the visible part of subrails in the door area and welding them to my fabbed up tube frame. Any thoughts or insight on this would be great. Thanks

Also I will be using a 32 frame

Not Model a's, but I did my 32 ford and a 34 ford truck cab. Rectangular tube from local recycle place.. They have short pieces which is long enough for subrail work, but plenty to choose from as most people buying there, want longer pieces

The A has to be way easier than the 32's, as it is flat on the bottom.

Just use common sense planning where to put the cross over pieces, like plan for trans tunnel area, battery area..etc

  5. I fully understand not just buying pre built replacement pieces. They Never fit as needed,,, Ever! You always need to correct some part of them or they are just plain wrong. Here is what think about using Rectangle tube. It's an over kill, your not building a Freight Train. Sheet metal is just fine, after all it already lasted 80 + years. Plus it's way easier to fab with. Here's what I did on my Roadster with 16 gauge. Oh, and no wood blocks and recessed mount bolts. This isn't exactly Apples to Apples but you get the idea.

  7. Nice looking part you made. I posted a reply there with a little different way to do it. The Old saying of give 5 skilled craftsman the same job and you'll get the job done 5 different ways.

  9. Tube sub-rails can be done.
Cutting and pie cutting and welding tiny pieces together, if you like that sort of thing. I don't care for it. Then you need to add flanges, bumps, reliefs. If it's on a 32 frame there is more swoops to make.

LOTS of work, welding, grinding, and thinking to save a few hundred bucks.
I sorta choose my battles because there are plenty and this is one doesn't have to fought.
    Just my 2 cents
