Over the years I must have hoarded at least 20 OLD out board motors. Some of them were pretty rare, alas when we moved I ended up letting all but one go. I saved the 57 Evinrude 7 1/2 horse Fleetwin my Grandpa won at the Illinois State fair in 57 (he used to let me drive the boat when i was young and it was my job to winterize and wax it every fall) and just picked up a 58 Johnson 3hp seahorse at a garage sale for 20 bucks. So it starts again!! What do you guys have? Anything? Mitch.
I am buying tune-up parts for my Homelite 55 today. It's a 4 stroke based on a Crosley engine. Made from 1961 to 1972.
These are cool. I have three (what I would call vintage out boards) but too new for here so I won't post pics. They are one late 60s Johnson 2.5hp, one early 70s Johnson 3hp and a early 70s Evinrude 6hp. They were all my grandfathers and were used as kickers on his boats. I grew up using them with him fishing on the east coast of Vancouver Island. He always kept them in top running order but they were getting pretty tired when he p***ed away. My uncles were going to huck them out. I saved them and I plan on restoring them one day. Just tucked away in the shed for now. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Fisher Pierce, BearCat, Homelite, all are 4 stroke engines. Had over 60 of them over the years, all that's left now are a couple NOS rubber water pump impeller's and a few props...........................................
Refreshing a 57' Mercury MK 55e right now, there's a Evinrude Fleetwin I got from the father in law too.
The older 4 strokes are great little motors for fishing, trolling (no need for a kicker), etc. not much power but fun if propped rite...................................... Look up Moriarity here on the HAMB he has a decked out Crosley in a Trike....
Oh yea Brigrat, I saw his 3 wheel chop and fell in love with it, after my TBI I can't ride a scoot anymore but I'd ride the bejesus outta that thing. Mitch.
Picked up this Elgin a few weeks ago. Probably from the early 50's.....says 7.5 hp. Don't know what I'm going to do with it.....Just too cool to p*** up!
George Riley's 75 hp, 1954-6. When Merc's biggest engine was a 40 and Evinrude's was 35, this was huge in many ways. Rile was of course famous for his overhead conversions for 4 bangers and a few V8 castings. He also built his own inboard/outboard drive which was very fast for the 1930s powered by a flathead V8. His design was infringed on by Volvo, Riley didn't have the funds to go after them. My friend has 2 of these outboards and a NOS powerhead. 5 cylinder, 4 stroke.
bought at auction in New Hampshire- $800. bucks!! including original trailer and gas tank. freshwater use only
A good friend (Tom Pesula) gave me a 1917 ? Evinrude. It's missing quite a few parts but that's not a problem. I am going to make it into a floor lamp for my man cave. I've built a flywheel and a gas tank out of MDF. When it's all done, it will make for a really cool addition to my haven. I'll post some photos the next time I work on it.
Bring it up here to the "Lakes Region", someone will buy it... pics stolen from here: http://www.boatracingfacts.com/forums/showthread.php?334-Waaaaaaaaaay-back-to-the-beginning/page4
about 5 years ago a boat repair shop closed down by me. he was having a yard sale where he would never give a price on anything. he had all the vintage outboard motors.. OLD stuff, I'm not a boat guy, but I know old stuff when I see it. he had them piled high in his s**** bins. too stupid to try ebay, or tell me a price for what he was throwing away. my buddy was trying to buy some tools from him, but he couldn't come up with a price. I'm sure he ended up tossing many thousands of dollars of good stuff away. I did manage to force him to come up with a price on a sheetmetal brake. it was like pulling teeth.
Wow.......Elto 4-60....what a work of art. I had two Eltos over the last 10yrs. that I was hoping to us to power a couple of rail frame midget race car projects that I had. Both engines and midget projects are now gone as part of the "downsizing" of my life. In 1990 when I last ran my vintage Solar rail frame midget in a vintage event, there was an Elto running in my heat.......the sound and smell was priceless.
I have some boats also so thought I needed a small engine collection too. Took all these pictures for my phone so I wouldn't buy duplicates. Don't think I've ever spent more than $25 but a few were given to me.
I love those old outboards. About 1955 our family took a vacation trip to Lake of the woods in Oregon. I was 14 at the time. I went down to the dock and told the guy I wanted to rent a boat. He said OK, I hopped in and finally figured out how to start the thing and off I went. My first experience with an outboard. I love the smell of those old hydrocarbon pukers as they blow the oily exhaust into the pristine waters.
