  6. Stop by the Viper's Pit. I made chili, but it'll be gone quickly. Saturday 10am for Bloody Caligulas, as always in loving memory of Mike Demarest. Let's see…chili, Bloody Caligulas, did I forget anything? Oh yeah, we should be cackling the 15oz Coupe on a full load of Nitro. Gotta work tomorrow, so I have to squeeze it all in Sat and Sun.

I'll post tomorrow night after I find out where the Good Gays decide to pit us.

  7. I didn't get to Pomona today (Friday) because of work. Here's what I hear went down though…

  8. Yes, Bluto will be in the house, er, track, er, pit. Yeah, Pit, that's it! The chili gets gone pretty quickly. Don't be late.

  9. WOW... that's great chili...!

Met a ton of HAMBr's "Bluto and his lovely wife Zophie, Chille Phil" and the "15 oz. crew... (they're "Nuckin Futs!!!!":D ) plus about twenty lurkers (you know who you are!!! Cause I can't remember...!!! )

The cars were running fast...!!! (But there were alot of "Red lights from the favorites.:( )

I took plenty of photo's and I'll get them up here as soon as I return back to "WisTexan"...!

Got to get to sleep...! Later...!

  10. A Tip of the Viper's Top Hat to those who made it all the way out to the far corner of the pits to visit us. It's 8:15 am and I'm heading back in a few minutes. Hope to see some more HAMBers today. I think there's a little chili left in the cooler. Also, I think there's a few 15oz Coupe crew shirts to be had. We celebrated Cinco de Mayo last night, yes I know, it was the 6th. All the tequila is long gone.

The Viper's Pit is at light pole #19. Way in the far end. See ya'll there,

    Chili Phil & the Vipers

  11. can't wait to see some photos..

  12. Well, I was too busy stirring chili, flipping burgers and sausages, making drinks, offering beers, watching racing, visiting and having fun with friends, old and new, to take any pix. But I saw a gazzion clicking cameras. The Vipers agreed that this was one of the best times ever. Lots of 5 second runs, close competition in the races, especially the dragsters, the smell and sound of the 90%+ nitro tune ups and the beautiful weather. The Nostalgia Funny Car class is shaping up to be huge. We didn't get the 15oz Coupe teched although we chased the tech people all weekend. I guess it was busy for them too. I can't wait for next time.

    Chili Phil

  13. I sure want to see some pix.

I think there were 23 redlights in the finals... a lil jumpy off the line....!

This looked Badass but had some bugs to work out on the strip.

BTTT for Chilli Phil tell us more about the 15oz coupe and more pics if ya got,em

  23. OK, here's a short overlook on the 15oz Coupe. Don't hold my feet to the fire on exact dates on some of the early history. I think in 1963 at Baylands raceway in Fremont Cal the fuel roadster of Demarest/Amende/Read went off the end of the track due to a chute fairure destroying the car. At the time the coupe was running C/Gas and not doing real well. The DAR guys approached Les Hawkins and said we should put our fuel engine in and make a bad ass fuel coupe. In the first outing of the car, all seven team members made passes and set five new records. The car was the terror of the old Rockpit, San Gabriel Raceway for the early sixties. DAR went on to become the Groundpounders and the Over The Hill Gang top fuel teams and have won more than five world championships in top fuel. The 15oz coupe was campaigned by Hawkins/Webster/McLeod for a short time after that and was retired.

In 2000 or so a bunch of the Vipers were BSing over at Mike Demarest's house and the 15oz Coupe came up in conversation. A few phone calls later revealed that the old war horse had been languishing behind a shed at Hawkin's place and that all the race parts and the left door had been stolen off the car. Mike needed something to do and the Vipers were horny to go racin'. So we brought the car to Mike's place and started playing with it. These things sure car take time. It was four years before it saw the light of day again. I have some pix of it when it first got to Mike's and some progress shots, but I'll need to resize them for here.

What's happening at present. Mike Demarest passed away last year leaving a huge hole in our hearts and the Coupe without a crewchief/team leader. The 15oz Coupe WILL rise again as a loving tribute to Mike. Main guys in the project are, Bill Demarest, Mike Bartlett, Les Hawkins, Terry Lee Minks, Bob Steele, Bill Schultz and the great Gary Read. Gary drove the car in the sixties and will pilot it again. At 56 years of age Minks is the youngest guy involved and there is probably over three hundred years of pro drag racing experience here.

The Coupe. 1934 Ford frame, updated to current specs by Jim Kirby racecar fabrication with modern cage and rigid suspension. Tha car ran spring front back in the day, but since it will be MUCH faster we decided to rigid mount the front axle. Tin work was done by Randy, Lil Newt, Warriner. Beautiful stuff, thanx, Randy. The engine is the late Don Wilson's "Bad Actor" 440 Donovin. Since the people involved will NOT embarrass themselves they have stepped up with a 20 GPM fuel pump and 44 amp MSD mag. The Coupe will get a two speed and should really haul ass. Plans are to run exhibition class (less rules) and match race any TRUE old style fuel altered that wants to go. These will be the Winged Express, currently being rebuilt and simularly stepped up to go fast. Also Bradford's Fiat, Pure Heaven and some I can't remember at this early hour. Of course we will keep the Mike Demarest 98% NITRO tune up.

Why 15oz? Back in the old days Burgermeister was the first beer to have a bigger than 12oz can. The garage was so littered with 15oz Burgie cans that people started refering to the car as the 15oz Coupe. That's the Burgie Man on the door.

I'm not yet at liberty to say where, but the plans are to debut the car next month at a race for Fuel Altereds.

Thank you for your interest. I know Mike is grinning in racers heaven.

    Chili Phil

PS thanks for the pix, Wingnutz. Glad you had fun. You are always welcome at the Viper's Pit.

Phil tell me a little about the chassis and susspension and the times you guys are looking at running.

When i set out to biuld my car alot of the 60,s fuel coupes inspired me to build it the way i did.

  29. '34 Ford frame, boxed, we tried to get it to pass tech last weekend and we need to add a K member and spreader bar. Spreader bar because the fuel tank is in front of the car. Front and read are solid mount. Engine is low in the frame for stability.

Since we have not even test ran the car, I'm not supposed to say how quick we hope to run. I will say that the engine has run some 5 second runs, but the chassis would never do that. I would say better than mid 7s. The same tuner turned the knobs on the Nanook in the 90s. Hope that gives a hint.
