Years ago I had a 55 Chevy truck that I had a 77 Camaro sub frame welded on. This gave me front disc brakes, power steering ect. This was pretty common to use 70's camaro/firebirds as donors. It was the right width, so no issues. Worked great. My question is, is there a 70's or 80's car that I can weld onto the front of a 55 Fairlane to give me the same effect.
i would imagine any late model truck's front end could be cut and the rails matched up some how. maybe a ranger if not a f150. you could even get a 4wd truck and never get stuck in the wet gr*** at the car shows
I mated the '70 olds cutl*** to my '56. Also put in the 455 olds with it Runs stops just like a hi-po cutl***, but with a cooler looking car.
Thete are plenty of options for the stock set up. With a complete front suspension rebuild including steering box and Aerostar coils. It will surprise you how well it will drive. Add in a front disc conversion if you feel the need and you'll be ready to go.
There was a 55 (?) Mercury top notch build running around Phoenix that used a late model Dodge Dakota front clip to allow instalation of a 4.6 dohc Ford. Saw him at Goodguys and the Pavilion cruise back 3 or so years.
With the availability of upgrades for our 50's Fords I can see no reason to go wacking off your existing front suspension there is plenty of information in the "Sticky FAQ" how to get more "bang for your buck" you might start here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/power-steering-add-on.1019325/
Yes plus the huge three spoked thin rimmed steering despite no power steering makes steering very easy. It reminds me of a large industrial gate valve.
Man my 55 drives as good as my new Lincoln. As stated above, don't subframe it. I am doing a subframe on a 58 Chevy pickup right now. It's a ton of work.
