Picked up a set of six 1935 Ford 16" wheels and the seller showed me some more wheels i could buy from him. The artillery wheels are 11 spoke wheels, 16 inch and 4,5 inch wide. I think they had a small hubcap with inner diameter of 22 cm or 8 5/8 inch. Anyone know what car they came from ? Yes i bought them, for 100 euro's the set of five i nearly stole them Hennie
They look like aftermarket(30's) "jumbo" wheels. Some were made by Cleve-weld....not sure about those, look for a stamp around the lug holes. And yes, you stole them......have seen sets sell here for +$1k.
General Jumbo or Goodyear Airwheel was my first thought as well but there were some European Fords with wheels like that although I don't remember what specifically they were from, either way, a great bargain for the price.
Hey Hennie, 1935 Renault had wheels like that, same bolt pattern/size as Ford. Are you sure the rim is at 16 inch and not 40cm ? 16 inch tire will allways fit on 40cm with 6mm play. See if you can find a Michelin stamp in the steel or otherwise a Dunlop France stamp. Nice wheels man. Those two V8 hubcaps look different to any others i have ever seen or is it the camera angle ?
from what I know the Renault were 12 spokes, Matford, Ford or Chenard & Walker? But I believe they came only painted, I can think only of Studebaker who had the spokes chromed on their artillery wheels.
Good info RMR&C. They are indeed Clev-Weld wheels. Thanks Henry for your reply but as stamped they are 16" and American made. No idea on the hubcaps. I bought them from the same guy, but he had only two of them. They are in great shap with no dents.
Aftermarket, tho some dealers would sell them as a sideline and equip new cars with them & "Jumbo" tires. They were never extremely popular for many reasons - the depression, cost, rapid tire wear, etc.
Beauties, i found four 16 inch Clark wheels a few years ago with bad chrome still bolted onto two 1932 Ford heavy front axles. They were under an old barnfind hay wagon . Right here in The Netherlands. Makes you wonder how those cl***y wheels got here. Probably before the war on some flashy showroom car. After the war there was just s****.
I've been interested in the wheels made by Cleveland Welding, for some time, but this is the first time ever, for seeing any with 11 ribs, and the raised hubcap adapters ........(Thanks for the photos).....
