Once my kids are grown, I plan to get a 59, 60 or 64 El Camino for my daily. Simple build, 283, 3 speed OD, disc brakes and AC.
Seen some really awesome El Caminos on this thread, which is giving me a good path for which direction I'm going with my '64 El Camino. I'm thinking of air-bagging it, a set of Radir Tri-Ribb III wheels, and functional exhaust dumps coming out of the front fenders just behind the tires. The work on it won't start until late fall, too busy enjoying driving it and the '35 Ford leaves no time for anything else. If I can find some time to install A/C, that will be done. I really like 1929Rats El Camino, looks just right for a gasser.
thanks Man! Ive had that car in my head since I was a boy...mix between Newbomb Turk's brothers car and a '66 elcamino that was local to me that sported a chrome tube axle.
Yeah, it looks great! post some more pics of it! Awhile back there were some pics of a similar black one, same year I think, floating around the internet. Ill see if I can find them, I didnt post them because I thought it was more hot rod/ gasser looking than Kustom. Maybe a little off topic but thats ok, its still el camino.
Thanks for the interest and kind words about my El Camino project Yes, that pic is from before I stripped it down and painted it and put in the motor and trans and really did all the work to it. That pic was when I thought about selling it after acquiring a Willy's I chased for 20 years, but, took the ad down and finished her over another 2 years. couple of those pics are still floating around the 'net. Car has 427 with 5 speed, 12 bolt with 355's and Detroit locker. Diamond pleat interior with a speed king go pedal (I'm also a drummer). Radir's with Polyglass tires, etc.... I call the car my "Street Freak", not a gasser like so may throw around these days...something that would have driven out of 1968.
1929rats, still drooling over your El Camino. Is that a cover over your gas tank or is the tank plated? I like it, but not practical for me as I drive all my cars as much as I can get away with. If it rains, I still drive the cars and clean them afterwards. But don't see a lot of rain, live in the desert of Southeastern Washington state, very nice weather year round, very low humidity. Yep... there is a desert in Washington state. Sometime this week, I'm going to try to put on a set of the Radir Wheels (Mickey Thompson) WWW cheater slicks. Had them on my 41 Ford for about 40 miles, sold the car last year. Just wondering if they will fit, they are 15 X 7.75 and I don't remember the backspacing of the rims. I'll probably just put it on the lift and see if I can fit them on. I'm also going to try them on the 35 Ford.
JR, that's a Stainless steel tank. you can buy them at any aftermarket chevelle/elcamino catalog company. The original was all dented in, and held in with wedges of wood! damn, if that car could talk...I welded in the bung for gas pickup when I launch at the drags. >>> The key to the back wheel wells when installing wheels is the backspacing, there isn't much room (unless you cut it up and put in tubs). I can get the backspacing for you if curious later today when I get home. send me a PM ---so we don't dominate the thread ; )
Thanks for the offer, but I can also measure it on my buddy's '65 El Camino. I need to have him post a picture or two of it on here. It's been nearly finished for a couple of years, inside and out. He's driving it with yellow epoxy primer, it's ready for paint. And when he decides to paint it, I'll grab a paint gun and lay down some paint. It has a 283 w/4-speed, interior he did himself with the exception of the Idit steering column, looks like it did when it rolled off the assembly line.

This one was built by Dave Stuckey, of "Lil Coffin" fame, in late 1958 (!). It is said to have been a driver for a while (through 1960), but Stuckey was unhappy with it, and cut it up!
Can't blame him for that. That thing looks like the unhappy marriage of the front half of Studebaker with an El Camino grafted on the back or the back half of an El Camino with a Studebaker grafted onto the front. To me, space-age and streamlined are two different styles that in this case, don't blend very well at all.
