Hey guys. I probably should have bought that Snap-on Hydramatic front band adjuster last year for $175. But, I didn't and now they seem to be getting stupid expensive. So I looked around on the internet and fashioned this one, from one made by a nice gentleman from Scotland. The '55 slant pan does not have a through the floor adjuster. Adjustment is done with pan removed. I digress. So, I bought a '55 slant pan all rebuilt with a 287 engine. Put those in my Chieftan. Drove good. Bands adjusted by the shop. The issue was a leak from the front pump. Why they ever used black permatex with an o-ring pump, I will never know. But anyways, I pulled the trans to remove the front pump and replace the o-ring. All clean inside as expected So, knowing the bands were adjusted right, (I drove the car), I wanted to have a tool for future use. Pulled the stock plug front servo. Bought a br*** plug same size, hardware store. Drilled and tapped the plug 1/4 x 28. Installed bolt into the plug. What I found with a properly adjusted front band: Plug inserted and tightened like the tool. Turned the bolt until it touched the piston top, like turning the tool. Then I turned bolt 5 turns like the tool. At 5 turns the adjuster wheel had just a bit of snug on it left or right. At 6 turns, the the adjuster wheel was to tight to turn w/o forcing. (I didn't). At 4 turns it was loose. The front band should be loose to start remember. So if you re***embled your hy dramatic and need a base point, somewhere to start, this cheap tool might help you out. Hope so.
