Station wagon? If so check the sending unit gasket on top of the tank. Also make sure your gas cap is the old vented style. If not you will have this problem over and over. The new vented gas caps are only allowed to vent one way due to EPA regulations. The wagon gas caps are different than the sedans because there is no tank vent. I had to drill a small hole in my cap to alleviate this problem. I dropped the tank in mine twice before I found out this info.

One last thing. How is your exhaust ran out the back? I had to have mine changed to exit out the sides. That and the tank fix took all the smell from inside my car.

dual pipes straight out the back and pointed down even with the bumper. nothing fancy. i dont get why faulty fuel tank components would produce exhaust smells. but i have the original cap and sending unit.

I kind of remember that the reason for station wagon exhaust exiting to the rear corners was to alleviate exhaust odor.

I misread you original post. I skimmed through it and thought gas smell. If the smell is that strong then you have a leak you haven't found or it is coming in from the back. I had both and it was bad. I just had a new system put on my car and it's so much better. No smell whatsoever.

I have a repo cap on my Wagon and have some gas smell. Did you drill the hole thru entire cap?

Yes. If I remember I'll get a quick pick for you.
