I have not seen anyone else do it this way so I am going to show you how I do them. I start with a used 15" trim ring that I get for almost free from a local tire shop. I then remove the spring steel clip ring from trim ring by grinding off the very outside edge of the trim ring. Once I have the spring steel clip ring removed I check the od for fit to the hub caps od. Most trim rings will work just fine on the 58/60 caddy caps. The 52/56 caddy caps are a little smaller in diam so I usally have to trim down the od of the spring steel clip ring. Now remove any of the stock caddy mounting stuff from your caps. There should be a u clannel on the very od of these caps that the clip ring will snap into simulare to the trim ring. Now snap the clip ring into the cap and check it for fit and adj the fit if needed. Now that it fits correct remove the cap with the clip ring. Make sure the valve stem hole in the cap and clip ring clearnce notch are allined. Now I simply epoxy the clip ring to the hub cap. It will looks like they were orginaly made like that.
Do you ever modify the 1949-1950 style ones for folks if they send you the hubcaps? Also, any idea if 1955 Studebaker hubcaps need the same modification to fit on GM 15x7/8 rims? Thanks, John Ryan
Stude caps need no modification. And please stay away from 7" or 8" wide rims. You're building a Custom dude !
Hey John I just did a post on another post about the 52 Sombrero's. Check it out. Yes I do this mod for people but it is realy not to hard to do yourself once you know what to use and how to do it. I can not remember how the 55 stud cap mounted so I am no help with that one.
Have you ever modified 56 Caddy caps to fit newer wheels? Or do you know what I can do to make them work? Thanks
How about some step by step pictures at different angles.......I can't get what you are saying with just one picture
