I am moving to southern california around the first of july need some advice about finding a place to live. I am looking for a place around Torrance, Redondo beach, Hermosa Beach, Lomita area. Anywhere that you don't have to deal with the freeway to get to Torrance. Are there any HAMBers out there with rental properties or know anyone that can help me find a place. The only real requirement that I have is that I need/want a garage for the coupe. Any advice about where there are some good places to look, info on the local watering holes would be greatly appreciated. Brady

Get a Pennysaver or LA Times paper. Good rentals in both of those. Recycler is hit or miss for rentals, but usually good for parts.

Good luck out here, see ya at the Luau.

I live in Torrance and I've got a few buddies moving down here from Westchester so I've been looking at the Daily Breeze (newspaper for the South Bay). There's a bunch of rentals in the cl***ifieds. Some decent prices for Torrance and Redondo Beach. If for some reason you can't pick one up, let me know and I might be able to ship you a copy or scan and email. Take it easy...

  5. westsiderentals.com We run all our apartments in Santa Monica thru them but they go further south as well. Check out the 'hood before you sign anything, lots on area's here you might not want to be when the sun goes down. Most area's in Torrance/Redondo are nice, just be careful.

  6. Sorry if I offend anyone in the South Bay, buy why would you want to go there from Utah?

Some areas are nice ($$$$) surrounded by absolute ghetto ($$$). Traffic doesnt move at all, too many people. Period. If you've never been here, you will hate it.

Before anyone bashes me, I've lived in Hawthorne, Lomita, Torrance, Westchester and San Pedro.

I didnt stay long in any of them. They all ****ed.
The good beach areas are inundated on the weekends. Get used to walking around alot.
    The parking laws **** ***.
You will need a garage because your car better be in it. An old car will get ticketed daily because all the snootchy ****s dont want to look at it.

but like said above you need to check out the places during the day AND at night before you sign. if you can't find a place with a garage maybe you could find some shop space.

  8. What is a snootchy ****?

Also try smdp.com, it's the Santa Monica local rag that has a lot of rentals listings down south. Craigslist.com is another place to look.

  9. Man you are in for a shock....the prices are what they are but the traffic....oh boy are you in for a shock....

I've lived in the "Hood" most of my life.....Simple way to handle the hood...make friends with the locals....I used to help the local Vatos with their rides or help their gramma take out the garbage...I never had a problem with people in the "Hood" you just gotta show some respect and you will get it....Don't walk around like a bad *** or like you are scared....most of the hood guys are just trying to get through life like the rst of us....

Now that I am officailly out of the hood I kinda miss it some times...the Ghetto birds I don't miss but the cool guys around the block were always good for laughs....and killer BBQ....besides the best anti-theft device are the guys on the coner doing their thing...they won't let anyone mess with you if you are cool with them....

    Good luck...

I'm in No. Redondo, been here 21 years and can't complain. I work in Long Beach by the airport and my commute is 30 mins one way door-to-door. There were two houses up for rent in my neighborhood in the last two months. Both were rented in a couple of weeks. One was 2 bed, 1 bath, approx. 900 sq ft with an attached 1 car garage on a big lot (for the area) the other was 2 bed, 1 bath, approx. 1400 sq ft with a detached 2 car garage on an alley. Don't know what they went for but $1700 to $2000 (maybe more) wouldn't surprise me. Nobody complains about old cars around here. My buddy down the street had a '64 Chevy pickup with big rust holes and the paint falling off and nobody cared. Several more beaters in the neighborhood and nobody complains that I know of. If a cars on the street unmoved for more than 3 days, and somebody complains, they'll ticket it. They clean the streets weekly like clockwork and if your cars in the way you get a ticket.

Utah's nice. I've been to Salt Lake and Provo a couple of times. Utah's one of the places I'd consider retiring to, but that's a good 12 or 15 years off.

    Good luck,
    Kurt

Thank you all for the info. Yeah it is way different from here, but I was down there for a couple months last summer so I got a little taste of the situation. I was staying at cal state dominguez hill...thats pretty hood I thought.. good old Carson.
I am expecting to spend around a $1000 a month...does this seem resonable. If anyone happens to hear about a GOOD place I am seriously interested...that would save me a trip down there just to find a place. I am looking for some place where I can drive to Torrance (190th street) without dealing with the 405. One problem that I am hearing is that places available now probably wont be at the first of July.

Is there many shopes that you can just rent a stall kind of thing?

    Thanks again.

Brady. I am going to be honest with ya. My girl and I just got through looking around that area for a place to rent. They are out there but, you are going to spend a little more than a grand. Land and space is becoming thin in these neck of the woods and Long Beach has some kool areas and kool stuff surrounding the are like Belmont Shores and the nicer places south of there. I would look into renting a house so ya don't have to abide by condo rules and apt rules and let the landlord know up front what ya got and that you will be wrenching at times on yer ride. We just went through that with our new landlords. Signed a contract implying all that I just said to you and they were kool with it. Just a little something to think about up front. We are going to reside in the Whittier area that has a llot of old houses, stores and most of all, alot of old cars and kool peeps around too. Ya might want to check out Whittier just to see for yerself. KNUX!
