Im building a 29 sedan currently has a geardrive banger header kit and no hoodsides, and am about to put together a set of hood straps for it. I want two straps per side with the springs and latches, not the straps that cover the hood. Ive already got the bits and pieces to assemble them and my friend who does great leather work is going to put them together for me. My question is on a 28-29, how did you attach the strap to the underside of the hood? I have footman loops for the bottom which is rather obvious. However, do most people just slide the original long pin back in the hood top and through the top of the leather strap that would have kept the hood sides attached at one time? I see in later model cars people using footman loops, either on the outsides of the hood or the undersides to use as an upper mounting point, but i dont care for that look, and im trying to keep from butchering up my hood tops too much so id prefer not to screw or weld anything on. Ive seen a few 28-29 cars with the straps connected up inside the edge of the hood, which i can only assume is the way i described above but i cant get a confirmation answer from any of those users off hand yet. (Ive attached a picture of another members straps.. [höllenteufel] .. that are mounted the way im hoping to mount mine)

If you have any experience would you please enlighten me. Trying to make sure i have all of my parts ahead of time so we only have to make these once.

    Thanks

I used footman loops but I also used the holes for my hood stiffener and bracing so as to minimalize the drilling.

Keep in mind my hood is custom one piece so it didn't have original hinge rods. I think you would be fine using them.

Check Lime Works, they used to sell a kit with all the hardware and straps.

Limeworks kit uses footman loops on the upper which I’m trying to avoid like I’ve seen others do.

When I was running without hood sides, I used the long rod of the hood and fabricated a tab out of sheet metal to go around the rod. Have fun

I made up brackets similar to yours shown in images 3 and 4.

They worked well and spread the load across a wider area of the standard hood side attachment

I just bend a piece of rod on a 1932 Ford setup years ago U shaped with an upper bar shorter than the other that just slid in were the original rod went. I can take a photo next week. Bob

I realized I was way over thinking this yesterday.. sheared some thin (18ga or so) stainless in a strip 1.5” wide then punched holes, brushed them wih some 3m and bent them up. Made a cardboard example first then dialed them in to the size I ended up settling on. These loop over the original hood rods and sandwich the top of the strap w two leather rivets. Effective and incredibly simple. Should work out just fine.

Pics after complete strap assembly to follow..
