  3. Its not very common in april to get snow but we just gor hit in se wisconsin. My birthday is mid april. In all my years i have only seen one measurable snow storm after that. That time it was in may. So after the bd i consider it race season around here. I did get the 66 chevelle out once this year. Did you buy a hydrometer yet? I just picked up two 50%-100% from good vibrations. that triple dog dare is still doggin you.

No Hydrometer... but I did get the engine back today. And... 2 weeks back I blew my back out so bad I ended up in the hospital. Now I'm off work for extended leave, on industrial strength anti-inflams and pain killers... and scared stiff of coughing, sneezing and some funny guy hip checking me as a joke. The floor is a looong way away right now. Guess I'll call in a dozen favors and get a crew in to put the Scout back together.

Got a crew of relatively healthy folks together to start putting the Scout back together. Things were going very well until we decided to put on the new (to me) SFI Spec RCI universal fit engine diaper that replaces the non NHRA Allstar unit I had installed last summer. The RCI unit is a ballistic containment system that could withstand a hand grenade... Loved the quality... then the love affair ended.

So before I rant on this let me say - that I researched this bit of kit and looked at videos and asked questions. It's all Crap !! Everything I found said it would fit a sbc and the install wasn't that hard... Crap !! Of course in hindsight all the videos and diagrams show it attached to an engine on a stand with no headers, mid plate, starter etc. And - therein lies the problem.

The metal lined upper edge is longer than the space between my mid plate and front plate... ok we can bend that if required but this causes bunching into the headers on both sides and a serious problem around the starter.

The bag itself is wider than the space between the headers - again - causing it to rest against the headers at 4 or 5 locations

The bag has a center cinch belt... which is totally useless as the buckle, once cinched, is now bunched up against the headers and starter

The smarter folks in the group bench raced a few solutions that included creating a custom mounting rod system. reversing the belts (poor idea) and building bumpers off the headers to push the bag away from the headers and against the block

Before we used more adult language, started cutting up the bag and / or welding stuff where we shouldn't be welding we threw in the towel. Larry - one of my helpers - has a blown sbc altered (Sheets and Giggles) and he used the NHRA approved Jegs bag and had good things to say about the installation... He also has a second one that was destined for his Super Comp rear engine dragster. So in the end, I will swap my far better quality RCI unit that doesn't freak'n fit anything with frame headers, for Larry's smaller lighter but approved Jeg's unit and he can put the RCI unit on whatever he wants to put it on that has upswept or sprint style headers. My choice was to put it over the RCI design teams head and then drive home the point with a 2 lb ball peen hammer... but I digress... I would assume by the pictures of the Jegs unit that the install will be exactly the same as my non approved Allstar bag which only required a hose clamp and a well placed allen key to keep it off one header tube.

    So... next weekend
    Same bat time
    Same bat channel

Install the Jegs engine fluid containment system, install fuel system and tank, install the cooling system. Check clearances and setting on the butterflies and barrel valve, add fuel and... fire the B* up !!

    Health Report:
My helpers were very adamant that I don't touch any tools, lift anything heavier than a glass of water or a fork at breakfast... and I still managed to tweak the back very hard. Neurosurgeon consult pending... pre-assessment pending, MRI booked for 23 July

That sucks, had back spinal fusion back in 2003 . Missed the whole season. Had to find someone I could trust to drive the car all season. Had 3 different drivers in the car that year.
No problems now , but at the time it was pretty scary.

The smaller, lighter, less involved Jeg's diaper went in with very little fuss. Just a small bracket to keep the bag off of one header tube. An hour later we fired up the Scout.

There are a few details to be addressed and some cleaning and maybe some upgrades but generally the Scout is up and running. Need to set the timing and add a tune but were will simply put it back to what worked last year

Nothing like 2 old broken guys working on a race car. Larry has bad knees and I have a bad back. We were making some very funny noises all morning.

Still waiting to hear from the Doctors as well as the disability program regarding what they will let me do. That will dictate whether or not the program will let me travel to Meltdown and Rock Falls...

In spite of my back issues I got the Scout to the track this past weekend. Thank you to my wife Lori and niece Megan who helped me a ton down the stretch getting the Scout assembled, fired, tuned and loaded. Without their help I would never have made it.

More thanks to my brother Paul for his assistance and patience and my Niece's boyfriend - Ryan - for doing all the heavy lifting at the track. He did everything except lift my old, broken, fat ass into the Scout

I was VERY apprehensive about even trying to make a pass as my back is really a mess. I was able to get in and out of the Scout albeit with difficulty, but once in I was good. Our home built aluminum seat actually gave great support and even some relief to my back - especially with the belts tight. I was also very apprehensive making a pass as I did not personally touch every nut and bolt on the machine so there was a little bit of the unknown... this did bite us a bit on the 1st pass... In the end we had a good day and I more or less survived. A couple of reclined sessions in the tow Dodge and anti inflammatories through the day helped.

First pass was very very soft and we found the transmission was slipping and I had water on the windshield in the lights. Back at the trailer we found the top rad hose didn't just have a loose hose clamp - it didn't have a clamp at all... That was repaired. My brother and Ryan put the Scout through the trans check exercises and made sure the trans fluid was topped up... It seems my trans says it's full until it's run hard and then I lose 2 litres into the trans cooler. All good now. We also found the steering shaft had come loose and the rod end bracing the shaft u-joint was loose... 2 more things I normally would have checked and double checked if I was fit enough to lean in and do so. Glad we found them before the story became a little more dire.

2nd pass was tentative with a 1.68 60 ft and 10.28 / 130 mph pass. Scout was perfect and leaked nothing. Fans loved the fact we match raced the Prefect and put on a show.

3rd pass was another Prefect match race and i leaned into the throttle a little harder but not much. 160 60 ft and a 10.21 / 118 early shut off. Still nothing leaking or making funny noises.

We were done for the day. Or more accurately, I was done for the day. Very done !! Legs were burning, back was throwing warning shots and I wasn't walking upright... After a free burger from the Drag Racers Association of Manitoba (DRAM) BBQ - Ryan loaded me up and I came home.

I'm seriously paying for it today. Handfuls of anti inflammatories, muscle relaxants and extra strength Tylenol are getting me through the day. But the successful day at the track has convinced me I will make the Meltdown 9 effort - with the Scout. It's working fine so I won't mess with it. I'm not working fine so there will be no guarantees I will make a pass...

The Prefect with my brother Paul and my niece Megan sharing driving duties made 3 good passes and one "test" pass yesterday. The good passes saw it go 10.60, 10.50, 10.48, 10.49. It's ready and will also make the trek South to Meltdown.

Assuming my back doesn't have another major episode I'll see all of you in 3 weeks kids
Make sure my spot beside Mike Belina stays reserved ... Mmmm Steak Tacos and Apple Pie

Doing basic maintenance and.... found the #1 plug 95% closed ...again !!
This time the guilty party - the piston - left a good size nick on the strap where it snuck a quick kiss... The rest of the plugs are perfect so it appears to be just the one. I'll add some indexing washers to all of them and send it.

To be honest I knew it sounded off when it was idling but I chalked it up to different timing. That's no excuse I know...It was crisp when I snapped the throttle so again... didn't think to check the plugs.

I found it, I'll fix it and we'll let'r rip at Meltdown
Hmmm 10.20 on 7 cylinders and an early shut off ... Hmmmm

Nostalgia / Meltdown Drags style cars - Open invitation - Sept 1, 2, 3 (Long Weekend) - Interlake Dragway - Gimli Manitoba Canada (About 90 minutes north of Winnipeg)

Pelissier Family Racing has been asked to put on a nostalgia show as part of the long weekend program at Interlake Dragway. We will be part of the entertainment that includes Jet Cars.

We have 6 cars - more or less confirmed - and we could use 2 or 4 more cars (or more !!).
If anyone is interested in joining the show Please Contact:
    > Dave Pelissier - 1-204-878-2116 or Loribou1@mymts.net
    > Paul Pelisser (Pro-Gear) - 1-204-783-4327 or Progear@mts.net

We are looking for nostalgia / old school style cars that are pre - 1971 - ish
    > Front engine dragsters or Rear engine dragsters with the correct "vibe"
    > Funny cars and AWB match bashers
    > Gasser and gasser style door cars
    > Altereds - old school - non aero
    > Comp and modified coupes and sportscars
    > Stock and Superstock style - old school
    > Comp and Modified eliminator (See exceptions)
    > 60's style drag bikes

This is a 2 day commitment (Sunday and Monday) We will be asked to make at least 3 passes each day as a group. Typically- around 11am, 1:30 and 4:30 (ish). Saturday is test n tune and not structured. If you can only make 1 day we would recommend it to be Sunday as that is the "big show" / most spectators day. The track is open Friday night for early arrivals (No racing Friday).

The plan is to simply match up similar cars and make passes for the sole purpose of entertainment. Cross the line burnouts, dry hops, big wheelies, are all acceptable and encouraged. If you want to run 1/8th mile - sure. Just want to bring the car for static display - ok as well. We will write up a short highlight story for your vehicle and the tower will talk about your history and cool factor

    Some exceptions will be made:
    > Special interest or really cool stuff that simply needs to be there... Send us a photo - we'll let you know
    > Anything twin engine (Paris brothers...are you listening ??)
    > Comp eliminator stuff from the mid 70's - especially high rpm, wheel standing, 5 speed stuff
    > Got a old school Top Sportsman car from the 80's in the garage - let us know

Interlake Dragway is a 1/4 mile airport based facility that has been open since the late 70's. It is IHRA sanctioned. It has good traction, huge pit facilities and a "very" long shutdown area. It's also the site of the Gimli Glider incident - if you want to say "I was there"

Gimli Manitoba is a small resort town on Lake Winnipeg. It features a nice beach, a golf course and some Icelandic themed special interest areas. There are some very good restaurants (Europa's has massive portions of very good food) and souvenir shops.

    Hotel and Facilities:
There are hotels and camping in the area but they will likely be at a premium for the long weekend. Winnipeg is about 90 minutes away if you want to drop trailer and commute.

Interlake Dragway has ample trailer and RV parking and camping space. They have washrooms and 1 shower. Concessions are open during race times. Race fuel is NOT sold on site.

Disclaimer: (Sorry if this chases folks away - but it has to be said)

All cars making a pass - must go through tech inspection... No exceptions !!
    > Personal safety equipment as required by the IHRA - MUST be current. Helmet, Belts, Suit, bar padding etc. This is a track requirement that we support completely.

If your car or safety equipment is not compliant to current standards - you can run 1/8 mile passes, idle it down the track or show it as a static display.

This is not a competition - this is purely exhibition...
    > There will be no ladder or eliminations - just a stress free and easy weekend with good people. If you want to match race with another car - absolutely.

There is no money to be made here...
    > No prize money - no eliminations
    > No appearance money - the track is offering free entry for the weekend
    > Travel costs, Hotels and Food are your responsibility

No modern facsimile of pre 1970 cars...
    > No modern wheels or big ugly aero hood scoops
    > No carbon fiber low rollers
    > No steam roller rear ends / pro street set ups
    > No nitrous or modern turbocharger setups
    > Absolutely Positively - No Throttle Stops !!! - They suck when it comes to entertainment value

If you are crossing the border into Canada
    > Bring a passport or current identification
    > Leave your firearms and medicinal marijuana at home.
    > If you have a criminal record or DUI's - you might be turned away

    Contacts:
    > Dave Pelissier - 1-204-878-2116 or Loribou1@mymts.net
    > Paul Pelisser (Pro-Gear) 1-204-783-4327 or Progear@mts.net

The highlight for my racing summer for the last 7 years has been the Meltdown Drags at the historic Byron Dragway in Byron Illinois.

We are honored and very grateful that our race cars are selected to attend this amazing event. What is quickly becoming a close second on the list is the MDA's Fall Fall Out in Sept. It is a perfect way for us to end our season.

But the highlight within the highlight is getting an invitation to run at the Meltdown Drags with the Great Lakes Gassers as part of their friendly rivalry with the Nostalgia Gassers Racing Association...

Yesterday we got the call from Tim Timoszyk of the GLG... We accepted with much enthusiasm.

My family and I are very excited to have the Scout and the Prefect as part of their group. Both the GLG and NGRA are great people and great competitors and I feel privileged to call members and their families - from both groups... friends.

    Thank you Great Lakes Gassers

    F*CK !!

New set of Firestone airbags went into the truck last week. Put air in them with the trailer attached yesterday. Left side press in hose insert at the airbag is leaking and the bag won't hold air for more than an hour. Just spent 2 hours under the truck troubleshooting. You can imagine how that went with my back the way it is. Finally confirmed the hose was cut properly, tried sealant, tried teflon, tried swearing, tried praying... no go.

I called Ride Rite tech support... got a snarky guy who blamed me for screwing up the kit, then got impatient when I didn't have the name, mailing address and phone number for Softy's Speed Shop (where I got the kit) at the tip of my fingers. he even had the balls to say "Hey buddy... I have other customers waiting" ...

Then he tried to sign off with - "we'll send you a new valve". I mentioned I'm supposed to leave tomorrow for a 14 hour trip... he snapped at me with "Well sorry buddy - I'm not coming to you drop it off... it'll 4 - 6 weeks"

    Zero empathy
    Zero Customer care
Zero f*cks given about my issue

If the tech support clown had explained there was no magic fix and the only thing they could do was send a replacement - this call would have gone a better direction

The good news is I've made the trip 4 times with this truck and trailer without the bags... and I'll do it again.

The real bad news... my strained, tired and abused back let go at the end of the tech call as I got up from the chair... It's very bad

I'm still going to try and make it down... too late to back out now.

    Leaving in 2 hours...

Got an emergency Chiro treatment / house call from my Sister last night (Who is my Chiro)... Then I ate a handful of muscle relaxants, prescription anti inflammatories, extra strength Tylenol and alternate heat and ice all night. My rockstar wife finished loading and travel prep for me. I was horizontal(ish) by 8pm and managed to get some acceptable sleep. My back isn't as bad as I feared - It's bad... but it's been worse. I'll be driving with a back brace and with the lumbar support cranked up high...

Stopping in Eau Claire for the night (9.5 hrs)
We'll be rolling in around 1:30 Thursday

    Drive safe everyone
    See you tomorrow

Meltdown 9 is in the books and it was great !!

For the first time in my 7 trips to the Meltdown Drags the weather interupted the event. Sure we had rainstorms in the past but they never stopped the racing. This year we got to see how Byron Dragway and the MDA reacted to adverse weather and delays it caused. I am very pleased to say - neither were found wanting... Even the racers and especially the spectators responded well. In the end, the rain interrupted event was just as good as ay previous year... maybe better

As stated a few times, my back is deteriorating and it nearly kept me from attending the event. A lot of help from my friends and family got me there and back. I am very grateful to them for it

The trip down was a caravan of 3 trucks and trailers. Larry and Arlene Arnold hauling the Sheets & Giggle altered, my brother Paul with his daughter Megan and her boyfriend Ryan hauling the Prefect Storm 49 Prefect and I was running solo with the Scout. Gary Misko and his 39 Willys with his crew, Ralph, Don and Murray, were on their own schedule and we would meet at the event. Our plan was to leave Wednesday, stop in Eau Claire Wisconsin for the night and roll into Byron around 1:30 Thursday.

For the first time in 9 border crossings with the truck, trailer, race car I was selected for an inspection. This went very fast and it was very professional. I found it odd that they confirmed my destination and went through the truck and my bags but didn't open the trailer. I joked that the trailer and the cool race car inside was the best part... they smiled and sent me on my way. One of the 3 officers thanked me for having the GPS set with the trip plan and for having the hotel reservation numbers readily available... made their job easier and my stop shorter. They also didn't say a word about the 4 purple VP Racing Fuel jugs in the back of the truck clearly marked "Meth"

The trip was uneventful and safe. Paul and Ryan rode with me a bit to help chew up the miles. We did the overnight as planned and rolled into Byron around 2:00. We noted 2 things immediately... the black angry clouds rolling in... and the 200+ trailers already in attendance. We were shocked... normally it's open pavement and a few trailers - at best... but not this year. The racers were serious !!

We got the trailers parked and the cars teched just in time to dodge the rain. Once we were loaded back up and out of the elements I headed over to see Mike Belina and John Denski with their traditional Canadian beer. Then we retreated to the hotel and "our" traditional Thursday night Texas Road House supper. Our new digs... Motel 6 ... were interesting to say the least. But the beds were clean and comfortable, the water was hot and it was cheap. The rest of the "issues" could be tolerated.

Friday it rained... In spite of this there were more than a few fans pulling in so I pulled out my portable shelter and rolled the Scout under it so the paying folks could have a look. With no racing I got to visit a number of my Meltdown friends and I was surprised at the generally "up" attitude shown by the racers and fans - they were still having fun. After a nice visit with Brian Kohlmann (and dropping off beer) we wandered through the swap meet and I visited with Bill Carlson (WAC Custom Axles) and dropped off more beer at my new friends at Besson Welding. (See last year's review). Bill had my new 2 1/4" od 4" drop axle with a center support at his booth. This serious piece was a work of art and we left it there as part of his display.

Around 2pm the track announced a pending break in the weather and started to prep the track. They were hampered by a few rain squalls and some misting but by 5:00 we were running 1/8th mile. Byron did a fantastic job keeping the track dry and safe. Very few folks had anything bad to say about the decision to run 1/8th mile and there were even a few hundred folks in the stands... hard core !!

My first run was supposed to be a low and level pass... it ended up as the best wheel stand I've done in a few years at this event. (that didn't break anything) 2ft high, good carry, didn't bend the axle... legged it out part throttle to a 6.51 barely edging out an immaculate 514 inch big block Ford powered Falcon

Larry and Paul made 2 runs Friday. the Prefect did what it does. Loud, smokey burnouts and 6.70 ish in the 1/8th. Sheets & Giggles made a good 1st pass then came back with a massive, violent burnout to start the second pass.. then the car lost fire down track... (Bummer) somewhere in the tail wagging smoke show it popped the primary circuit fuse... no power. $.50 cent fix

My back was very bad by the evening... too much travel and too much walking. I made myself happy visiting Mike Belina and John Denski as well as others... but retreated reasonably early to the hotel... It was a good 1st day.

Saturday came as overcast but dry... the track was ready, but we were still running 1/8th mile. After 2.5" of rain the top end was still seeping moisture.

My first pass around noon saw me lined up with Ted Beach... go figure... I seem to get one of the Beach boys every year... they have made a habit of kicking my ass... so why not the Dad ?? Challenge accepted... Ted's immaculate and patriotic 39 Chevy is stupid fast but the Scout stayed low and mean and rattled off a 6.11 / 112 to Ted's 6.09 / 113. If I hadn't cut a horrendous light (.333) it would have been a very close race. As it was I stayed on his back bumper the whole way... I called it a moral victory

My second pass Saturday I lined up against a nasty blown BBC 57 Chevy... who was also our pit neighbor. My launch was wheels up and the Scout went left. I got out of it and then back into the throttle - and it stood back up and went to the centerline - run aborted. But it made the photographers and spectators very happy !! Mission accomplished. Of course the 2nd hop was more than a little harsh and - go figure - I bent the axle. Not seriously but enough that it can be seen. It was still safe and we've run more caster than that in the past so we decided to run it.

After the Great Lakes Gassers / Nostalgia Gassers Racing association dinner, which was excellent, I was matched up against a gorgeous 41 Willys. Our 1/8th mile run saw the Scout pull another decent wheelstand but it slowed the Scout to a 6.50 ish. If I had another 100 ft I would have caught the Willys. My record vs. the NGRA remains dismal at 1 and 7

At this point it was time to watch the show. Larry and I went to the cackle fest behind the stands then Larry left to make a run. I joined my family and Brian Kohlmann in the stands and thoroughly enjoyed the night pairings. The show was cut short around 10pm by rain.

Sunday we were pleasantly surprised to see there were still 250+ cars in attendance as well as a healthy group of spectators. Even with the show still going on and now running 1/4 mile we decided to pack up and get an early run at the trip home. By noon we had said our goodbyes and were northbound.

Again, the trip was uneventful except for the leg between Tomah and Fargo... I'm pretty sure I got a load of bad diesel as the truck was way down on power. It was still capable of 70 mph and there were no warning lights on the dash or catastrophic noises being made so we soldiered on.

We rolled into Fargo and met up with Gary Misko's crew (39 Willys) at the Come-on-Inn... really nice rooms for a decent price. I got up early and left the folks to their breakfast and planned shopping to get a headstart home. My long awaited MRI (3 months) was scheduled for later that day and I did not want to miss it.

With fresh fuel in Fargo and Pembina the truck started to show signs of recovering it's lost power. 30 minutes from home it was it's old self...

I was home by 9am Monday - Meltdown 9 was officially over

I was extremely pleased with how well the MDA, Byron Dragway and the racers handled the weather and the delays. It speaks volumes about how well planned and run this event is.

Planning for the Meltdown 10 / 10th anniversary event is already underway for us. We will be there in some capacity. Hopefully with more cars from Winnipeg...

    Thank you MDA
    Thank you Byron Dragway
Thank you to the fans and racers

    Some Highlights:
    > The People... if all I could do was sit beside the Scout and talk to the fans... I would be a happy man. The folks this year braved the weather and came out to see us. I was totally blown away.
    > Don Moyer (Rebel Reaper Willys) wandered over and said hello to me in the staging lanes. After 5 years of communicating here and on the Inter-web it was nice to finally meet this very cool guy.
    > Travis Martin / Sucker Punch Falcon also wandered over. Shook my hand and told me he was a big fan of the Scout and it's antics... I was floored... the Sucker Punch Falcon is a wild, hard running piece of automotive art and he's a fan of the Scout ?? (Cool !!)
    > I have a spare front axle... and it's a beast !! Bill Carlson from WAC Custom Axles delivered on my 4"drop 2.25" reinforced axle... it will go in this year with a new shock setup that should keep the front end damage upon re entry to a minimum.
    > Scott Archer came out from under the rock he's been hiding under for 2 years and ran the Motown Shaker - hard... that was awesome
    > I helped a racer with a blower gasket and a blower stud / nut. He came back to show me his best ever timeslip and to thank me... He tried to give me $40 but I refused... that goofy ear to ear grin on his face was the best form of payment ever. Actually I helped more than a few folks this year with tools and parts. Just happy to be of service.
    > Staging lanes were decent. Still a long wait, but at least you could get into them this year... well done MDA and Byron Dragway
    > The nitro cackle fest - nuff said
    > The nitro pass between the Rock n Roll Express and the chute pack car out of Minnesota - loud, fast, out of shape ... like it should be
    > Big Iron and the 1000 ft burnouts
    > AA / Gassers showing no respect for their tires on every burnout... and they were fast!!
    > Being in the burnout box directly behind Nick Shervino when he and Mike put their tri-5s on the bumper - twice. My face still hurts from grinning
    > Talking for more than a few moments with Nick Shervino. I thoroughly enjoyed that exchange
    > Watching Brian Kohlmann get the Drag Week Nitro Chrysler and it's new 426 based combination down the track without swapping lanes or hitting the christmas tree

    Some Lowlights:
    > The weather ... nuff said
    > The hotel ... gross !! ... even at $60/night
    > There were more than a few racers breaking rule #3 - No F'n Whining - about - whatever... I love it when these morons think the track or the MDA can control the weather. I heard one of these clowns complaining to Eric Koop about Ric Panneton... who wasn't even there... I also heard rumblings about the lack of prize money and eliminations (You don't get it folks... You just don't get it...)
    > The jackass doing donuts in the swap meet area with his golf cart...
    > Leaving early on Sunday when - for the first time in 9 events - the show was still going full blast...

This pic is from Chris Simmons Photography - He's that hard working young man that sells those wood frames pics we are all showing off... I just wish he would send the pretty girl around when I buy my framed pic... Support this guy - please.

This was the double wheelstand / almost crossed the centerline pass against that nasty fast blown 57 Chevy. I got back on the gas... ummm... alcohol... after reentry from the first lift off... All this is with the wheelie bars almost scraping the ground to keep things safe and not break parts ... Take a good look at the pic third from the end... I almost got daylight under the back tire... again... for the 3rd straight year

It also tweaked my axle ... again... for the 3rd straight year... this blown injected alcohol stuff is hard on front axles

I recall that concept... but the Scout (aka..the Petulant Child) had other ideas I guess. I'm also thinking it was pissed off I kept it low and fast against Ted Beach... so it did 2 wheel stands on this pass to make up for it.

Seriously... the bars are so low they scrape the ground. And it still lifts 2 feet
